She was chief justice from 1999 to 2010. On July 21,2010,she announced her retirement. She was Senior Fellow of the Yale Corporation until she retired from the board in 2016,Senior Counsel at Choate Hall &Stewart,and a member of the Council of the American Law Institute. Marshall was elected in 2017 to the American Philosophical Society.
The Supreme Court of Illinois is the state supreme court,the highest court of the judiciary of Illinois. The court's authority is granted in Article VI of the current Illinois Constitution,which provides for seven justices elected from the five appellate judicial districts of the state:three justices from the First District and one from each of the other four districts. Absent mid-term vacancy,each justice is elected for a term of ten years,which may be renewed and the chief justice is elected by the court from its members for a three-year term.

He attended DePaul University for both his undergraduate work and Juris Doctor,finishing in 1976. The firm was founded in 1984 to represent plaintiffs in personal injury and wrongful death cases.
Roy John Solfisburg Jr. was the Chief Justice of Illinois for the 1962–63 term and again from 1967 to 1969. Solfisburg was elected to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1960,the first time in the states history a sitting Justice was defeated by a challenger. This created a political stir having a historically Republican candidate unseat a "Daley Democrat". As the then youngest Justice his brethren selected Solfisburg as chief justice for the 1962–63 term and in 1967,his colleagues again later elected him to an additional 3-year term as chief justice. Illinois Senator Everett Dirksen championed Solfisburg for an opening on the U.S. Supreme Court. Both in Illinois and Washington D.C. it was widely reported he was at the top of the U.S. Supreme Court nominee "short list".
Lawton R. Nuss is a former Kansas Supreme Court justice appointed by Governor Bill Graves in August 2002. By virtue of tenure,he became chief justice upon Robert E. Davis's resignation. Nuss announced his decision to retire,effective December 17,2019.
Rita B. Garman is a former American judge who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Illinois. She represented the Fourth Judicial District on the Supreme Court. She was elected by her peers to serve a three-year term as chief justice from October 26,2013,to October 25,2016. Garman announced on May 9,2022,that she would retire from the Supreme Court on July 7,2022. On May 10,2022,the Illinois Supreme Court announced that Fourth District Appellate Justice Lisa Holder White would be appointed to succeed Garman effective July 8,2022.

Lisa Holder White is an American lawyer who has served as a justice of the Illinois Supreme Court since July 2022. She previously served as a judge of the Illinois Fourth District Appellate Court from 2013 to 2022,and as a trial judge in the Illinois Sixth Judicial Circuit Court from 2001 to 2013. She is the first Black woman to be elevated to the Illinois Supreme Court.
