Joy Lehai Kanyarutokye (born 1946 [1] [2] ) was the first Ugandan woman to be crowned Miss Uganda with both parents Ugandan on 28 October 1968. [1] [3] [4]

Personal life and education

Lehai was a daughter of Dr Norman Kanyarutokye and she was the first out of five children. [1]

She graduated from Makerere University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. [5] [1]

She married Dr. Festo Higiro on 6 June 1970 at All Saints Church in Nakasero but they later divorced. [1] She was the grandmother of Sharon O a former dancer in the Obsessions dance group. [1]

Career

She was crowned the 1968 Miss Uganda on 29 October 1968 at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala when she was 22 years old. [1] [2] She weighed 111 lbs (approximately 50 kg) and her height was 5 feet and 4 inches. [1] On 14 November 1968, Lehai competed in London at the 1968 Miss World beauty content representing Uganda at Lyceum Theatre. [1]

Miss Pakistan World is a beauty pageant for women of Pakistani descent from around the world. The event used to be held in Toronto, Canada but has moved to Pakistan and is held annually in Lahore, Pakistan.

Stellah Nantumbwe also Stella Nantumbwe commonly known as Ellah is a Ugandan actress, media personality and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss Uganda 2013. She was Uganda's representative to the Big Brother Africa, in 2014.

Evelyn Christine Nabunya is a senior consultant obstetrician and gynecologist in the Uganda Ministry of Health, who serves as the executive director of the 450-bed Mulago Women's and Neonatal Referral Hospital. She was appointed to that position on 9 August 2018.

Quiin Abenakyo is a Ugandan model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Uganda 2018. She represented Uganda at Miss World 2018 in China and was crowned Miss World Africa 2018. At the Miss World 2018 contest, Abenakyo was a winner in the head to head challenge portion of the contest, and she placed in the Top 5 overall. She is the first Ugandan to place this high in this annual pageant.

Leah Kagasa is a Ugandan model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Uganda 2016. She reigned for 2 years as Miss Uganda from 2016 to 2018. She represented Uganda in Miss World 2016 in Washington, DC, that December. Currently she is involved in the Miss Uganda Foundation charity organization as an advocate for social issues like sanitation, teenage pregnancies and girl child education.

Zahara Nakiyaga, also Zahra Nakiyaga is a beauty pageant contestant who was crowned Miss Uganda 2015 at the age of 23 years. She represented Uganda in Miss World 2015 in Sanya, China, in December 2015.

Sylvia Wilson Namutebi Alibhai is a Ugandan former model and beauty pageant titleholder. She reigned as Miss Uganda in 2011 and represented Uganda at Miss World later that year.

Rosemary Salmon was the first and youngest woman to be crowned Miss Uganda on 5 November 1967. and also the first Ugandan to participate in an International beauty pageant. She was a Ugandan of British descent.

Hannah Karema Tumukunde is a Ugandan model and beauty peageant title holder who was crowned the Miss Uganda season 2023–2024. She represented Uganda at the Miss World competition which took place in India from February 18 to March 9, 2023. She emerged as the first runner up Miss World Africa at the 71st Miss World event that was close to Quiin Abenakyo and was also ranked among the top 10 queens with the best "beauty with purpose project".
