Joy L. Pachuau is an author and professor from Mizoram who resides at Delhi. She is a professor at Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. [1] Her research interest includes the social history of Mizoram and Christianity in India; she has also worked on the Portuguese presence on the west coast of India in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Education

Pachuau obtained her bachelor's degree from Fergusson College, Pune, in 1989 and her MA, Phil and Ph.D. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University [2] and D.Phil. degree from Oxford University in 2012. [3]

Awards and honor

Pachuau was awarded with the Mizo Award given to her by Sângthankima which was organised by the Vanglaini daily newspaper in Mizoram for her achievements in academic. [4] She has also been awarded Sneh Mahajan Prize for the Best Book (2012–14) in Modern Indian History by Indian History Congress. [5]

Mizoram is a state in Northeast India, with Aizawl as its seat of government and capital city. The name of the state is derived from "Mizo", the self-described name of the native inhabitants, and "Ram", which in the Mizo language means "land." Thus "Mizo-ram" means "land of the Mizos". Karnaphuli, or Khawthlangtuipui, is the largest and most important river in Chattogram and the Chattogram Hill Tracts. It is a 667-metre (2,188 ft) wide river in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from the Saithah village of Mamit district in Mizoram, India, it flows 270 kilometres (170 mi) southwest through Chattogram Hill Tracts and Chattogram into the Bay of Bengal. Before the Padma, it was the fastest flowing river in Bangladesh. It is said to "represent the drainage system of the whole south-western part of Mizoram." Principal tributaries include the Kawrpui River or Thega River, Tuichawng River and Phairuang River. A large hydroelectric power plant using Karnaphuli river was built in the Kaptai region during the 1960s. The mouth of the river hosts the Port of Chattogram, the largest and busiest seaport of Bangladesh.

Laldenga was a Mizo nationalist and politician from Mizoram in northeast India. He was the founder of the Mizo National Front, a social organisation turned political party. He was the first Chief Minister of Mizoram as a federated state, the office of which he held from 1986 to 1988.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Pachhunga University College</span>

Pachhunga University College (PUC) is a public institute in Aizawl, Mizoram, and the only constituent college of Mizoram University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament of India. Founded in 1958 as Aijal College, it is the oldest and largest college in Mizoram, by enrolment and campus size. It started with intermediate of arts courses, and later expanded to bachelor's degrees in arts, commerce and science. With the opening of master's degree courses in Mizo, philosophy and life sciences, it became the first postgraduate college in Mizoram.

Ṭhenphunga Sailo was a Brigadier of the Indian Army, and the second and twice the Chief Minister of Mizoram, a state in northeast India. He was the creator of Mizoram People's Conference, one of the major political parties in Mizoram. He was a recipient of Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Padma Shri for his humanitarian works during his military service, and Mizo Award for his lifetime achievements.

<i>Vanglaini</i>

Vanglaini is a daily newspaper in Mizoram, northeast India, published in the Mizo language. It is registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India. It is owned, edited, and published by K. Sapdanga. It remains the newspaper in Mizoram with the largest circulation.

The Young Mizo Association (YMA) is the largest and most comprehensive non-profit, secular, nongovernmental organisation of the Mizo people. It was established on 15 June 1935, originally as the Young Lushai Association (YLA), which was later replaced with the "Young Mizo Association" in 1947. It was initiated by the Welsh Christian missionaries who understood the need of cultural conservation of the Mizo tribe, who were under pressure of political and social modernisations. It was registered as SR No. 4 of 1977 under Indian Societies Registration Act on 14 May 1977 to the Government of Mizoram.

Lammual Stadium is a football stadium located in Aizawl, Mizoram, India. It is used mainly for football matches. It was one of the venues for the Northeast Games 2012. The stadium is used for playing Mizoram Premier League matches.

Mizoram is one of the fastest growing economies among the states of India with a per capital income of Rs 308571. Mizoram had the second highest GSDP growth during the 11th Five Year Plan (2007–2012) in Northeast India at 11% exceeding the target of 7.8% which is also much higher than the national average of 7.9%. During the 10th Five Year Plan (2002–2007), the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was expected to grow at around 5.3% but grew at 5.7%. The biggest contributors to GSDP growth are agriculture, public administration and construction work. Tertiary sector of service sector continued to have the contribution to the GSDP with its share hovering between 58% and 60% during the past half a decade.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zawlbuk</span>

Zawlbûk was a traditional bachelorsʼ quarters of the Mizo people, predominantly of the Luseis living in Mizoram, India. It was prominently the largest house in the tribal village, and it was customary for every village to have it constructed in the middle of the habitation. Even though its basic use was as a dormitory for all unmarried men of the village, it was much more a social institution where education, entertainment, skill and personal developments, and security of the tribal community were (almost) entirely centred.

The history of Christianity in Mizoram covers the origin and development of all forms of Christianity in Mizoram since the British occupation at the end of the 19th century. Christianity arrived as a consequence of tribal warfare, raids of British plantations, and the ensuing punitive British military expedition called the Lushai Expedition of 1871. The subsequent annexation of the erstwhile Lushai Hills to the British Empire opened the gateway for British Christian missions to evangelise the Mizo people.

Sângthankima is a humanitarian and social worker in Mizoram, India. He is the founder of Thutak Nunpuitu Team (TNT), a voluntary organisation, which runs the largest charitable institution in Mizoram. His institution, a registered society since 1991 under the Firms and Societies in India, started as a rehabilitation society for alcoholics in Champhai town. With donation of a plot of land in Aizawl city, it expanded into an orphanage with formal school, health centre, and sanatorium. In addition to more than a dozen of awards for his social service, Sangthankima has received an honorary doctorate (D.H.L.) from Rangoon's Methodist Bible College in 2008, Achievers Award 2013 For NGO, Mother Teresa Awards for Social Justice in 2014, and the Mizo Award of 2014.

Pahlira Sena Chawngthu (1922–2005) was a Mizo poet, singer, and radio broadcaster from the Indian state of Mizoram.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Laltluangliana Khiangte</span> Mizo academic, playwright and poet

Laltluangliana Khiangte is a Mizo academic, playwright and poet of Mizo literature. He was the principal of the Serampore College and a former professor at Pachhunga University College and the North Eastern Hill University. He is presently serving as the senior most professor at the Department of Mizo at Mizoram University. He is a recipient of the Pu Buanga Award, the highest literary award of the Mizo Academy of Letters. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to Indian literature.

Lalnghinglova Hmar is a journalist and sports promoter in Mizoram, India. He works as the joint editor of Vanglaini, a leading daily newspaper in Mizo language. He is also currently the honorary secretary of Mizoram Football Association and Executive Committee member of the All India Football Federation. Through his journalism and sports activities, he has been credited with the revolution of football in Mizoram. He helped to establish the Mizoram Premier League, for which he is recognised as the father of Mizo football.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aizawl</span> Capital of Mizoram in India

Aizawl is the capital of the state of Mizoram in India. Aizawl was officially established on 25 February 1890. With a population of 293,416, it is the largest city in the state. It is also the centre of administration containing all the important government offices, state assembly house and civil secretariat. The population of Aizawl strongly reflects the different communities of the ethnic Mizo people.

Pius Malekandathil is an Indian historian and a priest of the Syro-Malabar Church. He is a professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
