Juan Fernando Cristo Bustos (born 11 July 1964) is a Colombian lawyer and politician. He served as a Colombian Senator from 1998 to 2014,and was Minister of the Interior under Juan Manuel Santos from 2014 to 2017. [1] In this capacity,he played a key role in negotiating and implementing the peace accords signed with FARC. [2] He was reappointed Minister of the Interior in 2024 by President Gustavo Petro.
Juan Fernando Cristo is the son of Colombian senator Jorge Cristo Sahium ,who was assassinated in 1997. [3] He studied law at the University of the Andes.
Starting in 1993,he served Colombia as a diplomat for several years. After his father's assassination,he ran for the Colombian Senate,an office he would go on to hold from 1998 to 2014. During his last year in office,he was president of the Senate.
From 2014 to 2017,he was the Minister of the Interior for the second government of Juan Manuel Santos. [4] During his tenure,he helped broker the Colombian government's peace accords with Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). [2]
On May 25,2017,Cristo announced his candidacy for Colombian's presidency in the 2018 election. [5] However,he lost the Liberal Party candidacy to Humberto de la Calle,who subsequently lost the general election to right-wing candidate Iván Duque Márquez. [4]
He was appointed Minister of the Interior on July 3,2024 by President Gustavo Petro Urrego. During his tenure,he has called for an independent verification of the disputed 2024 Venezuelan presidential election. [6]
Presidential elections were held in Colombia on 26 May 2002. Álvaro Uribe,the candidate of the recently created Colombia First movement,was elected,receiving 53% of the vote by the first round. Uribe took office on 7 August.

The Colombian peace process is the peace process between the Colombian government of President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC–EP) to bring an end to the Colombian conflict,which eventually led to the Peace Agreements between the Colombian Government of Juan Manuel Santos and FARC-EP. Negotiations began in September 2012,and mainly took place in Havana,Cuba. Negotiators announced a final agreement to end the conflict and build a lasting peace on August 24,2016. However,a referendum to ratify the deal on October 2,2016 was unsuccessful after 50.2% of voters voted against the agreement with 49.8% voting in favor. Afterward,the Colombian government and the FARC signed a revised peace deal on November 24 and sent it to Congress for ratification instead of conducting a second referendum. Both houses of Congress ratified the revised peace agreement on November 29–30,2016,thus marking an end to the conflict.

Iván Duque Márquez is a Colombian politician and lawyer who served as the president of Colombia from 2018 to 2022. He was elected as the candidate from the Democratic Centre Party in the 2018 Colombian presidential election. Backed by his mentor,former president and powerful senator Álvaro Uribe,he was elected despite having been relatively unknown a year before the election. He ran on a platform that included opposing Juan Manuel Santos' peace agreement with the FARC guerrilla group. After Duque's term came to an end,he was succeeded by Gustavo Petro on 7 August 2022,after Petro won the runoff round in the 2022 Colombian presidential election.

Rodolfo Hernández Suárez was a Colombian politician,civil engineer,and businessman who served as a senator of Colombia from July to October 2022. He was mayor of Bucaramanga from 2016 until his resignation in 2019. As the nominee for the League of Anti-Corruption Governors (LIGA) coalition,Hernández placed second in the first round of the 2022 Colombian presidential election,and he was ultimately defeated by Gustavo Petro in the second round run-off election. Hernández briefly served in a senate seat offered to the runner-up in a presidential election and took office on 20 July and resigned in October that same year.
The League of Anti-Corruption Governors is a Colombian political movement,created in October 2019 by the former mayor of Bucaramanga,Rodolfo Hernández Suárez,and by the candidates for the 2020–2023 municipal council. It was conceived as an independent civic alternative to traditional political parties and ideologies,with the purpose of reaching the presidency of the republic in the 2022 election. Earlier,in the 2015 local elections,Rodolfo Hernández managed to reach the Mayor's Office of Bucaramanga through an independent candidacy via the "Movimiento Cívico Lógica Etica y Estética",previously founded by Hernández to support his political campaign.
