Juan Pablo Machado is a Colombian-French artist. He is best known for his animation work on the channel Lofi Girl.
Originally from Colombia, [1] Juan Pablo Machado moved to Lyon in 2013 to study at the École Émile-Cohl after a stint at the Bogotá art school. [2]
He left the Émile-Cohl school in 2018. [3]
In 2017, during his last year of study, he decided to respond to a call for tenders received by his school. [4] [5] [6] The call for tenders comes from the YouTube channel ChilledCow (now Lofi Girl), which broadcasts lo-fi hip hop music continue. [7] She used an image from the movie Whisper of the Heart to Studio Ghibli [8] showing the character of Shizuku studying. ChilledCow has already seen its videos deleted for copyright infringement, so it wants to call on an artist. [4]
The founder of the channel wants "a student busy revising her courses, with a visual to the Miyazaki". According to Machado, "I didn’t know anything about hip-hop lofi nor did I draw my style from Japanese animation. I took it as a challenge". [7] It was also a first for Machado, who is used to working on paper and works directly on graphic tablet. [7] He then decides to send sketches to ChilledCow. [2] Several positions for the character are tested, including a lying position at the end of which the character had to return to its initial position, which is not retained because it is too long to animate. [9] As for the background, it is left black at the origin, to save time. [2] But the idea of scrolling through time emerges and it is then that Machado decides to make the La Croix-Rousse hill of Lyon appear by the window. [10] [11] [12]
