Julian Jacobs

Julian Isadore Jacobs^[1] (born August 13, 1937 in Maryland)^[2] is a former judge of the United States Tax Court.

Jacobs received a B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1958 an LL.B. from the University of Maryland Law School in 1960, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center in 1965. Admitted to Maryland Bar in 1960, he was an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C., from 1961 to 1965, and in Buffalo, New York, in Regional Counsel's Office, from 1965 to 1967. He entered private practice in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1967, working as an associate (1972–74) and partner (1974–84) in the law firm of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger and Hollander. During this time, he was chairman of a commission appointed to improve the quality of the Maryland Tax Court, in 1978, and participated in various other studies and commissions convened to consider changes in Maryland tax laws. He also taught as an adjunct professor of law in the Graduate Tax Programs of the University of Baltimore School of Law (1991–93), University of San Diego School of Law (2001), and the University of Denver School of Law (2001 to present).

Jacobs was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as Judge, United States Tax Court, on March 30, 1984, for a term ending March 29, 1999. He retired on March 30, 1999, but was recalled as senior judge to perform judicial duties. On June 7, 2019, Jacobs permanently retired from judicial service.^[3]

Frederic N. Smalkin is a retired United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland and is currently a professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he was awarded the James A. May award for excellence in teaching and mentoring.

The UBalt School of Law is one of only two law schools in the state of Maryland. The University of Baltimore School of Law is housed in the John and Frances Angelos Law Center, at the northeast corner of West Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street on the University of Baltimore campus in the city's Mt. Andre Maurice Davis is the former city solicitor for Baltimore and a former United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He was formerly a United States district judge and was nominated first for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit by President Bill Clinton in 2000. He was renominated to the Fourth Circuit by President Barack Obama on April 2, 2009, and he was confirmed by the Senate on November 9, 2009. On February 28, 2014 Davis assumed senior status. Davis retired from the federal bench to become the City Solicitor for the City of Baltimore of which he served from 2017 to 2020.

Richard D. Bennett is a United States Senior District Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Born in Maryland, Bennett is a graduate of Severn School, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. He previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney and the United States Attorney for Maryland, and was awarded multiple commendations for his service. In private practice, Bennett was a partner in a major Maryland law firm, where he specialized in white collar criminal defense. Appointed to the federal bench in 2003, he took senior status in 2021. While maintaining an active trial docket in the District of Maryland, Bennett has increasingly been sitting by designation with the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Marvin Joseph Garbis is a former United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

Alexander Harvey II was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

Benson Everett Legg is a former United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

Austin Hoyt was a judge of the United States Tax Court from 1962 to 1973.

John Gregory Bruce was a judge of the United States Tax Court from 1952 to 1967.
