Julie Andersen is an activist and a founder of Shark Angels, a nonprofit organization focused on shark conservation. [1]

Biography

Andersen has been interested in ocean life since she was young; she started diving in 1995. [2] For more than 14 years, she worked in advertising in Chicago and owned a successful marketing business that worked with clients such as Porsche and Citibank. [3] In 2007, at a film screening in New York, she met director Rob Stewart. [4] Within months, she sold her agency, her car, and her house and moved to South Africa to become a shark conservationist. [4] [5] [6] [7] The same year, she founded the non-profit Shark Angels and swam with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Executive Director Kim McCoy and Save Our Seas Foundation Head Field Biologist Alison Kock to push back on the idea that sharks are vicious, maneating creatures. [8] [9] [10] The foundation of Shark Angels was inspired by the horrors of the shark finning industry; [10] since then, she has gone undercover in more than 20 countries to expose illegal shark fin trade. [6] She has been featured on CNN, the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and NatGeo Wild. [6]

In 2012, she was named a Sea Hero by Scuba Diving Magazine. [11] [12] In 2014, she and cinematographer Paul Wildman created the short documentary Black Swan, which features Andersen "dancing" with an oceanic white tip shark, considered one of the most dangerous species in the world. [5] Andersen also founded the non-profits Shark Savers and, with Stewart, United Conservationists (UC). [13] [3] One of UC's movements in its early days was #FinFree, which aimed to educate the public about illegal finning. [13] [6] [14] [3] Stewart died in 2017 while filming the documentary Sharkwater Extinction . Andersen, diver Brock Cahill, and a team of others helped his parents finish and promote the film. Andersen has also been a consultant for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, PEW, and WildAid. [3] She is the Director of Global Marketing for Johnson Outdoors (SCUBAPRO and Subgear brands) and a member of the PADI Diving Society. [6] [18] As of 2018, Andersen is based in California. [16]

Rodney Winston Fox is an Australian film maker, conservationist, survivor of an attack by a great white shark, and one of the world's foremost authorities on that species. He was inducted into the International Scuba Diving Hall of Fame in 2007. He was born in Adelaide.

Benjamin Cropp AM is an Australian documentary filmmaker, conservationist and a former six-time Open Australian spearfishing champion. Formerly a shark hunter, Cropp retired from that trade in 1962 to pursue oceanic documentary filmmaking and conservation efforts. One of his efforts for The Disney Channel, The Young Adventurers, was nominated for an Emmy award.

These organizations fight for many causes including stopping pollution, overfishing, whaling and by-catching, and supporting marine protected areas.

Shark fin trading in Costa Rica, or shark finning, is an illegal practice in the country. It poses a serious problem with shark populations and organized crime within Costa Rica. The trade in Costa Rica is vigorously controlled by the Taiwanese mafia because of the high value of shark fins in restaurants in the Pacific Rim countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and China where Shark fin soup can cost up to $100 a serving in top restaurants. Some 95% of shark fin trading activity in Costa Rica culminates in the docks of Puntarenas on the western coast, notably Inversiones Cruz Dock and Harezan Dock, which are often privately run by the Taiwanese. The industry in Costa Rica took off from the 1970s as a result of the growth in demand from the emerging wealthy Tiger economies of the Asia-Pacific for shark fin as a delicacy. By the 1990s, the shark fin industry in Costa Rica had become one of the world's most important in shark finning, especially as a major cargo-unloading point for international fleets because of tax laws and government corruption in cracking down on the trade.

A sequel to his 2007 film Sharkwater, the film, which Stewart was working on at the time of his death in a diving accident in January 2017, was completed by the Rob Stewart Foundation in collaboration with director Sturla Gunnarsson and editor Nick Hector.
