Julius Waweru Karangi (born 28 April 1951) is a retired military officer from Kenya who was Chief of the General Staff of the Kenya Defence Forces from 2011 until 2015. [2]
Julius Karangi joined the Kenya Air Force in 1973. He trained as a cadet in the United Kingdom and was commissioned as an officer in 1974. He qualified as a flight navigator in October 1975 and was assigned to the Flying Wing of the Kenya Air Force. [3]
General Karangi received the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, [4] the Order of the Burning Spear and the Legion of Merit. [5]
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are the armed forces of the Republic of Kenya. They are made up of the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy, and Kenya Air Force. The current KDF was established, and its composition stipulated, in Article 241 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya; it is governed by the KDF Act of 2012. Its main mission is the defence and protection of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Kenya, recruitment to the KDF is done on yearly basis. The President of Kenya is the commander-in-chief of the KDF, and the Chief of Defence Forces is the highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military adviser to the President of Kenya.
The Tatmadaw is the military of Myanmar. It is administered by the Ministry of Defence and composed of the Myanmar Army, the Myanmar Navy and the Myanmar Air Force. Auxiliary services include the Myanmar Police Force, the Border Guard Forces, the Myanmar Coast Guard, and the People's Militia Units. Since independence in 1948, the Tatmadaw has faced significant ethnic insurgencies, especially in Chin, Kachin, Kayin, Kayah, and Shan states. General Ne Win took control of the country in a 1962 coup d'état, attempting to build an autarkic society called the Burmese Way to Socialism. Following the violent repression of nationwide protests in 1988, the military agreed to free elections in 1990, but ignored the resulting victory of the National League for Democracy and imprisoned its leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The 1990s also saw the escalation of the conflict involving Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State due to RSO attacks on Tatmadaw forces, which saw the Rohingya minority facing oppression and even genocide under the rule of democratically elected president at the time Aung San Suu Kyi.

It was created when the country, then known as South West Africa, gained independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. He went on to be Chief of Defence Intelligence in 2006, Chief of Joint Operations in 2009 and the first Commander of Joint Forces Command in December 2011 before being appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff in May 2013. Peach succeeded General Sir Nick Houghton as Chief of the Defence Staff on 14 July 2016. He succeeded General Petr Pavel as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee on 29 June 2018, serving as such until his retirement from NATO in June 2021.
General Sir Nicholas Patrick Carter, is a Kenyan-born former senior British Army officer who served as Chief of the Defence Staff from June 2018 to November 2021.
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) is the highest-ranking military officer in the Kenya Defence Forces and the principal military adviser to the President of Kenya and the National Security Council. The CDF outranks all respective heads of each service branch and has operational command authority over the service branches. He leads the meetings and coordinates the efforts of the Service Commander, comprising the CDF, the Commander of the Kenya Army and Kenya Air Force, Kenya Navy and the Commandant of Military Intelligence. The CDF has offices in Ulinzi House. Following the 2010 Constitution, the Chief of the General Staff was replaced with the Chief of the Defence Forces.

Salestrand has served as Chief of Defence Staff, head of the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters, head of the Swedish Armed Forces Special Forces and as the Commandant General in Stockholm. From 2014 to 2018, he served as State Secretary to the Minister for Defence Peter Hultqvist. From 2018 to 2023, Salestrand served as Chief of His Majesty's Military Staff.
