The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university in Cape Town,South Africa. Established in 1829 as the South African College,it was granted full university status in 1918,making it the oldest university in South Africa and the oldest university in Sub-Saharan Africa in continuous operation.
Mamphela Aletta Ramphele is a South African politician,anti-apartheid activist,medical doctor and businesswoman. She was a partner of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko,with whom she had two children. She is a former vice-chancellor at the University of Cape Town and a former managing director at the World Bank. Rosina Mamokgethi Phakeng is a South African professor of mathematics education who in 2018 became a vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town (UCT). She has been the vice principal of research and innovation,at the University of South Africa and acting executive dean of the College of Science,Engineering and Technology at UNISA. In 2018 she was an invited speaker at the International Congresses of Mathematicians. In February 2023 it was announced that she would leave her position as vice-chancellor of UCT and take early retirement. She was succeeded by Professor Daya Reddy on 13 March 2023.

Maxwell Sakhela Buhlungu is a South African sociology professor and university administrator. He is the current vice chancellor of University of Fort Hare and the former dean of humanities at University of Cape Town. Buhlungu's work focuses on the labour and other social movements. He has also taught at the University of the Witwatersrand,the University of Johannesburg,and the University of Pretoria. At Fort Hare,his efforts to combat corruption lead to threats that culminated in a January 2023 assassination attempt that killed his bodyguard. Before academia,Buhlungu worked as a teacher and was the assistant general secretary of the Paper,Printing and Allied Workers' Union.
Tania S. Douglas was a Professor of Biomedical Engineering,Research Chair in Biomedical Engineering and Innovation as well as Director of the Medical Imaging Research Unit in the University of Cape Town (UCT),South Africa. She conducted research concerning medical innovation,image analysis,and the development of technologies to improve medical device innovation in South Africa. She was also the founding Editor-in-Chief of Global Health Innovation,a journal which disseminates research results about health innovation in developing settings.
The 2021 Table Mountain fire is a major fire that started on 18 April 2021 in and around Table Mountain National Park and the neighbourhoods of Newlands,Rosebank,Mowbray and Rondebosch in Cape Town,South Africa. The damage to sites in the Table Mountain area included the Rhodes Memorial,where a restaurant burned down;the upper campus of the University of Cape Town (UCT),where the Special Collections library was gutted;and Mostert's Mill,a historic windmill that burned down. In addition,five firefighters were hospitalised.
Alison Lewis is a South African chemical engineer known for her research in crystallisation and precipitation as applied to the recovery of valuable metals. She is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and is a member of UCT’s Senior Leadership Team. Lewis is also the founder and director of UCT’s Crystallisation and Precipitation Research Unit.
Archibald Boyce Monwabisi Mafeje,commonly known as Archie Mafeje,was a South African anthropologist and activist. Born in what is now the Eastern Cape,he received degrees from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Cambridge. Wieland Gevers is a retired South African biochemist and education administrator. He is emeritus professor of medical biochemistry at the University of Cape Town,where he has taught since 1978. He was a deputy vice-chancellor of the same university between 1992 and 2002.
