Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao was an Indian-American mathematician and statistician. He was professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao was honoured by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time.

The announcement of his appointment as Director of Sasin was made on 7 June 2014. He stepped down in 2017.

Tata Subba Rao (1942 – 13 April 2018] was a professor of statistics in the School of Mathematics, University of Manchester. He gained his MA at Karnatak, his PhD from Gauhati University in 1966 under the guidance of Jyotiprasad Medhi, and DSc from Manchester in 1988. He was a specialist in time series analysis especially non-stationary and non-linear time series analysis, higher order spectral analysis, theory of random fields, time series methods for analysis of environmental variables and multivariate nonlinear models. The Subba Rao–Liporace models, and Subba Rao Gabr window for bivariate spectra are named after him.
Birinchi Kumar Barua was a folklorist, scholar, novelist, playwright, historian, linguist, educationist, administrator and eminent 20th century littérateur of Assam, with both scholarly and creative pursuits. He was the pioneer in the study of folklore in North East India, and was one of the many founders of Gauhati University. Barua's contributions to Assamese literature are significant, both as a novelist and as an early literary critic.
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha is the pen name of a famous Assamese short story writer. His real name was Surendra Nath Medhi. His short story collection Ghulam won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974. Chaliha did not go to receive the award himself and it was later sent to him by the Akademi.

Versatile Assamese short story writer and Professor of Physics and later a lifetime associate at Assam Engineering College Surendra Nath Medhi better known by his pen name Saurav Kumar Chaliha was his son and noted Mathematician, Emeritus Professor of statistics at Gauhati University and Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology Jyotiprasad Medhi was his grandson as he was the son of his daughter Kadambari Medhi and her husband Binandi Chandra Medhi.
Sibsagar College, Joysagar, is a college offering graduate and postgraduate courses affiliated with Dibrugarh University. The college is situated at the eastern bank of Joysagar Tank and is approximately 5 km southwest of Sivasagar town. In 1947, Padmadhar Chaliha founded the college and his son, Paragdhar Chaliha, was the chief architect. Initially affiliated with Gauhati University, from 1965 until the present, the school has been affiliated with Dibrugarh University. The college campus is 103 bighas of land, and the school contains 16 different departments.

Surjya Kanta Hazarika is an Assamese litterateur, an eminent scholar, author, publisher, playwright, lyricist, composer, cultural activist, feature film and documentary maker, social worker and philanthropist. Hazarika is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 2008 for his contribution to Literature & Education. He is the current president of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Okhil Kumar Medhi was an Indian chemist and academic. He is best known for his time as the Vice-chancellor of Gauhati University in Guwahati, Assam, where he was also a professor of inorganic chemistry and former Head of Department in the university’s chemistry department. After completing a Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Medhi undertook research at both the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and North-Eastern Hill University, but spent much of his academic career at Gauhati University. His scientific work has been varied but has included contributions to the fields of inorganic chemistry and carbon nanoparticles.
