Jyotiprasad Medhi was a professor of statistics at Gauhati University and Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology. [1] [2] [3]
Medhi started his schooling in Dibrugarh and in 1940 he passed matriculation from Dibrugarh Government High School. [4] After matriculation, he did his graduate studies in Cotton College in 1946 and was a gold medalist in BSc with Honours in mathematics. There he received the Sudmerson Gold Medal and Rajanikant Barat Gold Medal. [3] [4] Medhi did his MSc in Pure Mathematics from Calcutta University, and got the Debendra Nath Gangopadhaya Gold medal for record marks obtained and the Post graduate First class first gold medal in 1948. [4] In 1952, he took a loan of ten thousand rupees from Govt of Assam and moved to England to pursue Master of Statistics (MStat) from the University of Manchester and completed in 1954. He worked with M S Bartlett in the University of Manchester in 1955 on the topic 'Time Series Analysis'. [5] Thereon Medhi moved to France to complete his DSc at the University of Paris in 1956 under the supervision of Robert Fortet, [6] while Georges Darmois and Daniel Dugué served on his thesis examination committee. He had also taken a diploma in French Language with mention 'Honorable'. Its worthy to mention that he had written his doctoral thesis in French Language. [4]
Medhi joined as a lecturer of statistics at Cotton University erstwhile Cotton College in 1948. [3] However, in the same year Gauhati University was established and he was invited to work as professor in Gauhati University. Accepting the invitation, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as a lecturer. [4] In between his tenure, he had taken MS degree from England and DSc from Paris. [4] [3] Medhi returned to Gauhati University where he became a professor and was the head of the department of statistics till he retired in 1985. [7] Earlier in Gauhati University, both mathematics and statistics were in a common department, however, under the able leadership of Prof Medhi, statistics became a full-fledged individual department. In 1987, two years after retirement, he was entitled the honour of professor emeritus at the same university and remained so until his death in 2017. [2] Under his guidance, several students got doctoral degrees and Tata Subba Rao is the first among them. From Southern India, Subba Rao had come to Assam to pursue his research under Prof Medhi and later he had joined Manchester University as a Professor. [4] In 1979, he established the 'Population Research Centre' and served as a director. He played a prominent role in shaping the newly formed Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Assam, IASST by serving as director. [4]
Medhi published many articles in peer reviewed international and national journals. [8] He also published two books on stochastic processes each with over 500 citations. [9] [10] [11] [3]
The J Medhi memorial lecture is annually held in the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati at the Department of Mathematics. [12] In 2016, Medhi was conferred an Honorary doctorate DSc by Tezpur University.[ citation needed ]
Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao was an Indian-American mathematician and statistician. He was professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao was honoured by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time.

She is the editor of the Assamese literary magazine Gariyoshi and a former director of the National Book Trust, India. She has been a professor and lecturer at Cotton College, Guwahati, Assam in the Political Science Department and was active in the Assam Movement in the early 1980s.
Tata Subba Rao (1942 – 13 April 2018] was a professor of statistics in the School of Mathematics, University of Manchester. He gained his MA at Karnatak, his PhD from Gauhati University in 1966 under the guidance of Jyotiprasad Medhi, and DSc from Manchester in 1988. He was a specialist in time series analysis especially non-stationary and non-linear time series analysis, higher order spectral analysis, theory of random fields, time series methods for analysis of environmental variables and multivariate nonlinear models. The Subba Rao–Liporace models, and Subba Rao Gabr window for bivariate spectra are named after him.
Birinchi Kumar Barua was a folklorist, scholar, novelist, playwright, historian, linguist, educationist, administrator and eminent 20th century littérateur of Assam, with both scholarly and creative pursuits. He was the pioneer in the study of folklore in North East India, and was one of the many founders of Gauhati University. Barua's contributions to Assamese literature are significant, both as a novelist and as an early literary critic.
Saurabh Kumar Chaliha is the pen name of a famous Assamese short story writer. His real name was Surendra Nath Medhi. His short story collection Ghulam won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 1974. Chaliha did not go to receive the award himself and it was later sent to him by the Akademi.
Kaliram Medhi was a prominent linguist, writer and essayist from Assam who wrote in both the Assamese and English languages in the early part of modern Assamese literature. He was the third president of the Asom Sahitya Sabha in 1919 held at Barpeta. He was honoured with the Rai Bahadur title in 1946. Versatile Assamese short story writer and Professor of Physics and later a lifetime associate at Assam Engineering College Surendra Nath Medhi better known by his pen name Saurav Kumar Chaliha was his son and noted Mathematician, Emeritus Professor of statistics at Gauhati University and Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology Jyotiprasad Medhi was his grandson as he was the son of his daughter Kadambari Medhi and her husband Binandi Chandra Medhi.
Sibsagar College, Joysagar, is a college offering graduate and postgraduate courses affiliated with Dibrugarh University. The college is situated at the eastern bank of Joysagar Tank and is approximately 5 km southwest of Sivasagar town. In 1947, Padmadhar Chaliha founded the college and his son, Paragdhar Chaliha, was the chief architect. Initially affiliated with Gauhati University, from 1965 until the present, the school has been affiliated with Dibrugarh University. The college campus is 103 bighas of land, and the school contains 16 different departments.

It was established in 2017 by the provisions of an Act from the Assam Legislative Assembly which merged Cotton College State University and Cotton College. Surjya Kanta Hazarika is an Assamese litterateur, an eminent scholar, author, publisher, playwright, lyricist, composer, cultural activist, feature film and documentary maker, social worker and philanthropist. Hazarika is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 2008 for his contribution to Literature & Education. He is the current president of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Okhil Kumar Medhi was an Indian chemist and academic. He is best known for his time as the Vice-chancellor of Gauhati University in Guwahati, Assam, where he was also a professor of inorganic chemistry and former Head of Department in the university’s chemistry department. After completing a Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Medhi undertook research at both the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and North-Eastern Hill University, but spent much of his academic career at Gauhati University. His scientific work has been varied but has included contributions to the fields of inorganic chemistry and carbon nanoparticles.
