K. M. Chandrasekhar (born 20 February 1948) is a retired Indian civil servant,who was the 29th Cabinet Secretary of the Republic of India from 2007 to 2011 for a four-year term under which he directly reported to the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He is a 1970 batch Indian Administrative Service officer from Kerala Cadre. [2] In 2023,he was honoured with Kerala Sree Award,third highest civilian award given by the Government of Kerala. [3]
K. M. Chandrasekhar was born in Kerala to Ittyanath Thangamani from Ittyanath family Villadom,Thrissur and Kesava Menon,who was Chairman of the Railway Service Commission. He is the nephew of I. K. K. Menon,the eminent Malayalam writer who also served as the Secretary to the Election Commission of India (ECI). After graduating from college,he got an MA in history from the University of Delhi. He then earned his M.A. in Management Studies from the University of Leeds.
Chandrasekhar worked in the Indian Administrative Service from 1970 to 2011. During the last four years of his career,he held the highest position achievable in the Indian civil services,that of Union Cabinet Secretary,reporting directly to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. After his retirement in 2011,he was offered a position equivalent to Cabinet Minister in his home State,Kerala,as Vice Chairman of the State Planning Board, [4] which he held for the next five years until 2016. He has been Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance,Government of India,and Finance Secretary in his State Government. In the Ministry of Commerce,he has worked as Chairman of the Spices Board (of which he was founder chairman),as Joint Secretary (Trade Policy Division) in the Ministry and in two diplomatic assignments abroad.[ citation needed ] He is on the Boards of ten companies,eight of them in the Tata Group and the others in the health care sector. [5] [6] He has been Chairman of the Federal Bank,President of a medical research institute and hospital under the Department of Science and Technology,Government of India (the Sri Chithra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology,Trivandrum) and currently chairs,in an elected capacity,an economic think tank,teaching and research institution,the Centre for Development Studies,Trivandrum,affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi. [7] He is also Honorary Adviser to an Ayurvedic institution,the Arya Vaidya Sala,Kottakkal. His memoir 'As Good as My Word' is published by Harper Collins India in December 2022 and he is now working on his second book. [8] [9] [10]
Chandrasekhar is married to Jaya,who taught English language and literature. They have a daughter. [11]
Kannoth Karunakaran was an Indian politician who served as the chief minister of Kerala in 1977,from 1981 to March 1982,from May 1982 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1995. He is the founder of the Indian National Congress (INC)-led United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition,which governed the state in the periods of 1982-87,1991-96,2001-06 and 2011-16;and currently is the main opposition in Kerala since 2016. He has also served as the Union Minister of Industry from 1995 to 1996 and served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly for four terms- 1967 to 1969,1978 to 1979,1980 to 1981 and 1987 to 1991. He also has the distinction of being one of the longest serving Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Leaders in the country,holding that post from 1967 to 1995.
Arackaparambil Kurien Antony is an Indian politician and lawyer who served as the Minister of Defence of India from 2006 to 2014,making him the longest serving Defence Minister in India. He previously served as the 6th Chief Minister of Kerala from 1977 to 1978,1995 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2004. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Action Committee of the All India Congress Committee,Congress Working Committee,and member of the Congress Core Group and Central Election Committee.
Jairam Ramesh is an Indian politician belonging to INC. He is a Member of Parliament representing Karnataka state in the Rajya Sabha. In July 2011,Jairam was elevated to the Union Council of Ministers of India and appointed Minister of Rural Development and Minister of the new Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. Vappala Pangunni Menon was an Indian civil servant who served as Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of the States,under Sardar Patel. By appointment from Viceroy and Governor-General of India Wavell,he also served as Secretary to the Governor-General (Public) and later as Secretary to the Cabinet. E. Ahamed,Edappakath Ahamed in full,was an Indian politician from Kannur in northern Kerala. A Member of Parliament between 1991 and 2017,he was a key figure in India's diplomatic relations with the Middle East.
Lakshmi N. Menon was an Indian freedom fighter and politician. She was Minister of State from 1962 to 1966. As delegate she held a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in December 1948 at the adotion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Shivshankar Menon is an Indian diplomat,who served as National Security Adviser of India under Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. He had previously served as the Foreign Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. Prior to that he was Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan,and Sri Lanka and ambassador to China and Israel. Alappat Sreedhara Menon,known as A. Sreedhara Menon,was an Indian historian from Kerala. He is best known as the State Editor (1958–68) of Kerala District Gazetteers (1961–1975). He served as registrar of the Kerala University from 1968 to 1977,before retiring in 1980.
Abubakar Abdul Rahim was an Indian politician,freedom fighter,and union minister. He was born to Sri Abubecker in Kollam. The government run District Hospital of Kollam district was renamed after him in commemoration.
M. M. Jacob,in full Mundakkal Mathew Jacob,was an Indian politician,working in Indian National Congress. He married Achamma Kunnuthara from Tiruvalla,Kerala and had four daughters. He was appointed Governor of Meghalaya in 1995 and again in 2000 for a second term. He also discharged the function of the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh as well for some time in 1996. He is longest serving governor of any Indian state. He served for more than 11 years.

Sivakumar is an Indian politician who is a member of Indian National Congress and a former Minister for Health,Family Welfare and Devaswom,Government of Kerala in the Second Oommen Chandy ministry. He has represented the Thiruvananthapuram Assembly constituency in Kerala from 2011 Assembly election in Kerala to 2021. He was a member of the 13th Lok Sabha representing Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency.

Vellamvelly Muraleedharan is an Indian politician from Kerala who served as Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs of India from 2019 to 2024. He was the eighth State President of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala. He was also a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He was sworn in as a Union Minister on 30 May 2019. On 12 June 2019,Muraleedharan was appointed Government Deputy Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha.
