The Nazrul Institute is Bangladesh's national institute, established in February 1985. [3] [4] Its headquarters are located in Kabi Bhaban in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh. [5] It fulfills a number of roles; promoting the literary work of the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, recognising excellence in literature research by conferring awards, and public engagement. [6]

Structure and governance

The institute is headed by an executive director who has a trustee board to advise them. The first executive director of the institute was Mohammad Mahfuzullah and the first chairman of the trustee board was Mohammad Nasiruddin. [7]

Functions and activities

According to the Nazrul Institute Ordinance of 12 June 1984, the functions and objectives of the institute regarding the poet are:

  1. Conduct study and research on the writings
  2. Compile, preserve, edit and publish poems and songs
  3. Organise discussion meetings, lectures, seminars, conferences
  4. Run a library containing books on the poet's life, literature, music, records of his songs, tapes, films
  5. Prepare musical notations and make gramophone records, tape records, films
  6. Impart training in singing and reciting songs
  7. Confer awards to scholars for outstanding research [7]

The institute has preserved around 1,500 authentic Nazrul Geeti songs. [8]

Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet, short story writer, journalist, lyricist and musician. He is the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul produced a large body of poetry, music, messages, novels, and stories with themes, that included equality, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī", meaning "the rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title of "Bidrohī Kôbi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Gīti.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nazrul Geeti</span> Songs composed by Nazrul Islam

Nazrul Sangeet, also Nazrul Geeti, refers to the songs written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam. Nazrul Geeti incorporate revolutionary notions as well as more spiritual, philosophical and romantic themes. Nazrul wrote and composed nearly 4,000 songs, which are widely popular in Bangladesh and India. Some of the most notable Nazrul Sangeet include Notuner Gaan, the national marching song of Bangladesh and O Mon Romzaner Oi Rozar Sheshe, a Bengali Islamic song on the festival of the Bengali celebration of Chand Raat and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Sadya Afreen Mallick is a Bangladeshi singer and journalist. She is an exponent of Nazrul Geeti. She is editor of the Arts and Entertainment section of The Daily Star.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bangla Academy</span> Bangladeshs national language authority

The Bangla Academy is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh that fosters the Bengali language, literature and culture, works to develop and implement national language policy and conducts original research in Bengali. Established in 1955, it is located in the Burdwan House in Shahbagh, Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zainul Abedin</span> Bangladeshi painter and pioneer of the modern art movement

Zainul Abedin, also known as Shilpacharya was a Bangladeshi painter. He became well known in 1944 through his series of paintings depicting some of the great famines in Bengal during its British colonial period. After the Partition of Indian subcontinent he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts at the University of Dhaka. The Indian Express has described him as a legendary Bangladeshi painter and activist. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the Bengal famine of 1943 are viewed as his most characteristic works. His homeland honored him with the title "Shilpacharya" "Great teacher of the arts" for his artistic and visionary attributes. He was the pioneer of the modern art movement that took place in Bangladesh and was rightly considered by Syed Manzoorul Islam as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern arts, soon after Bangladesh earned the status of an independent republic.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jamal Nazrul Islam</span> Bangladeshi theoretical physicist and mathematician (1939-2013)

Jamal Nazrul Islam FRAS was a Bangladeshi mathematical physicist and cosmologist. He was a professor at University of Chittagong, served as a member of the advisory board at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and member of the syndicate at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology until his death. He also served as the director of the Research Center for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (RCMPS) at the University of Chittagong. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Abdul Alim was a Bangladeshi folk singer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1975 for playback in Sujan Sakhi. He was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1997 by the Government of Bangladesh.

"Bidrohi" is a popular revolutionary Bengali poem and the most famous poem written by Kazi Nazrul Islam in December 1921. Originally published in several periodicals, the poem was first collected in October 1922 in a volume titled Agnibeena: the first anthology of Nazrul's poems. Many have seen, in this poem, elements of romanticism, heroism, and love. Syed Ali Ahsan wrote that the poem was inspired by Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself".

Chandranath is a 1984 Bangladeshi film directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam. This is the adaptation of the novel of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay by the same title. It stars Abdur Razzak, Shuchanda, Doyel and Golam Mustafa in the lead.

Karunamaya Goswami was a Bangladeshi musicologist and litterateur. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2012 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to music research. He is known as a Nazrul Geeti exponent.

Talim Hossain was a Bangladeshi poet. He was the founder of Nazrul Academy in Dhaka. He was the editor of the literary magazine Mahe Nao in the 1960s. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1982 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to Bengali literature.

Shabnam Mustari is a Bangladeshi Nazrul Geeti singer. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1997 and Nazrul Award in 2014 by the Government of Bangladesh. Her notable songs include `"Laili Tomar Esheche Phiria"`, `"Amai Nohe Go Bhalobasho Mor Gaan"`, `"Piya Piya Piya"`, and `"Tumi Shuniye Cheyona"`.

Khilkhil Kazi is a Bangladeshi singer. She is the daughter of elocutionist Kazi Sabyasachi and Uma Kazi, and granddaughter of Bangladesh National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. She was awarded Nazrul Award 2013 by the Nazrul Institute.

Kazi Sabyasachi was a Bengali elocutionist. He was the eldest surviving son of one of the most prolific Bengali poets of the 20th century Kazi Nazrul Islam.

<i>Padma Meghna Jamuna</i> 1991 Bangladeshi film

Padma Meghna Jamuna is a Bangladeshi National award-winning film was directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam. The film was released in 1991. The film was produced by Mohammad Iqbal Hossain and story written by Mohammed Mohiuddin and also screenplay and dialogue by Jalaluddin Rumi. The film stars Bobita, Farooque, Champa, Bulbul Ahmed, ATM Shamsuzzaman and more. In 1991, this film received the National Film Award for the best film award including other six categories.

Nazrul Academy is an academic research institution devoted to the study of the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and his works including Nazrul Geeti. The academy is located in Moghbazar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
