The Nazrul Institute is Bangladesh's national institute, established in February 1985. [3] [4] Its headquarters are located in Kabi Bhaban in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, Bangladesh. [5] It fulfills a number of roles; promoting the literary work of the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, recognising excellence in literature research by conferring awards, and public engagement. [6]

Structure and governance

The institute is headed by an executive director who has a trustee board to advise them. The first executive director of the institute was Mohammad Mahfuzullah and the first chairman of the trustee board was Mohammad Nasiruddin. [7]

Functions and activities

According to the Nazrul Institute Ordinance of 12 June 1984, the functions and objectives of the institute regarding the poet are:

  1. Conduct study and research on the writings
  2. Compile, preserve, edit and publish poems and songs
  3. Organise discussion meetings, lectures, seminars, conferences
  4. Run a library containing books on the poet's life, literature, music, records of his songs, tapes, films
  5. Prepare musical notations and make gramophone records, tape records, films
  6. Impart training in singing and reciting songs
  7. Confer awards to scholars for outstanding research [7]

The institute has preserved around 1,500 authentic Nazrul Geeti songs. [8]

Kazi Nazrul Islam Bangladeshi poet, writer, and musician (1899–1976)

Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet, writer, musician, and the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul is regarded as one of the greatest poets in Bengali literature. Popularly known as Nazrul, he produced a large body of poetry and music with themes that included religious devotion and rebellion against oppression. Nazrul's activism for political and social justice earned him the title of "Bidrohi Kobi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Geeti.

Syed Nazrul Islam 20th-century Bangladeshi politician

Syed Nazrul Islam was a Bangladeshi politician and a senior leader of the Awami League. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he was declared as the Vice President of Bangladesh by the Provisional Government. He served as the Acting President in the absence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Nazrul Geeti Songs composed by Nazrul Islam

Nazrul Geeti or Nazrul Sangeet, literally "music of Nazrul", refers to the songs written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul Geeti incorporate revolutionary notions as well as more spiritual, philosophical and romantic themes. Nazrul wrote and composed nearly 4,000 songs, which are widely popular in Bangladesh and India. Some of the most notable Nazrul Sangeet include Notuner Gaan, the national marching song of Bangladesh and O Mon Romzaner Oi Rozar Sheshe, an Islamic song on the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Sadya Afreen Mallick is a Bangladeshi singer and journalist. She is an exponent of Nazrul Geeti. She is editor of the Arts and Entertainment section of The Daily Star.

Bangla Academy

The Bangla Academy is an autonomous institution funded by the Bangladesh government to foster the Bengali language, literature and culture, to develop and implement national language policy and to do original research in the Bengali language. Established in 1955, it is located in Burdwan House in Ramna, Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair.

Zainul Abedin Bangladeshi painter and pioneer of the modern art movement

Zainul Abedin was a Bangladeshi painter born in Kishoregonj, East Bengal, British India. He became well known in 1944 through his series of paintings depicting some of the great famines in Bengal during its British colonial period. After the Partition of Indian subcontinent he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts at University of Dhaka. The Indian Express has described him as a legendary Bangladeshi painter. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the Bengal famine of 1943 are viewed as his most characteristic works. His homeland honored him with given the title "Shilpacharya" "Great teacher of the arts" for his artistic and visionary attributes. He was the pioneer of the modern art movement that took place in Bangladesh and was rightly considered by Syed Manzoorul Islam as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern arts, soon after Bangladesh earned the status of an independent republic.

Jamal Nazrul Islam Bangladeshi mathematical physicist and cosmologist

Jamal Nazrul Islam was a Bangladeshi mathematical physicist and cosmologist. He was a professor at University of Chittagong, served as a member of the advisory board at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and member of the syndicate at Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology until his death. He also served as the director of the Research Center for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (RCMPS) at the University of Chittagong. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2000 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Abdul Alim was a Bangladeshi folk singer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1975 for playback in Sujan Sakhi. He was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1997 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is a government financed public university of Bangladesh. It is also known as JKKNIU. It is located at Nama para Battala, 2 kilometres West from Trishal Bus stand, some 22 kilometres from Mymensingh district and 100 kilometres from Dhaka.It is the first general university established in Mymensingh division. The university was established in 2006. At present more than seven thousand students are studying in the university.

Bidrohi (poem) Revolutionary poem by Kazi Nazrul Islam

"Bidrohi" is a popular revolutionary Bengali poem and the most famous poem written by Kazi Nazrul Islam in December 1921. Originally published in several periodicals, the poem was first collected in October 1922 in a volume titled Agnibeena: the first anthology of Nazrul's poems. Many has seen, in this poem, elements of romanticism, heroism, and love. Syed Ali Ahsan wrote that the poem was inspired by Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself".

Bari Siddiqui Musical artist

Bari Siddiqui was a Bangladeshi singer-songwriter and flautist. His songs include Shua Chan Pakhi, Amar Gaye Joto Dukkho Shoy, Pubali Batashe and Manush Dhoro Manush Bhojo.

Badrunnesa Dalia

Badrunnesa Dalia is a Bangladeshi mainstream Nazrul Geeti and Rabindra Sangeet singer, performer and a music teacher. She is noted for her versatility as a multi-genre artist (singer).

Sudhin Das was a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet musician. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh.

Abdul Quadir was a Bangladeshi poet, essayist, and journalist. He was the recipient of Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1963 and Ekushey Padak in 1976.

Karunamaya Goswami Bangladeshi musicologist and litterateur

Karunamaya Goswami was a Bangladeshi musicologist and litterateur. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2012 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to music research. He is known as a Nazrul Geeti exponent.

Talim Hossain was a Bangladeshi poet. He was the founder of Nazrul Academy in Dhaka. He was the editor of the literary magazine Mahe Nao in the 1960s. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1982 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to Bengali literature.

Shabnam Mustari is a Bangladeshi Nazrul Geeti singer. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1997 and Nazrul Award in 2014 by the Government of Bangladesh. Her notable songs include `"Laili Tomar Esheche Phiria"`, `"Amai Nohe Go Bhalobasho Mor Gaan"`, `"Piya Piya Piya"`, and `"Tumi Shuniye Cheyona"`.

Khilkhil Kazi is a Bangladeshi singer and organizer. She is the eldest daughter of elocutionist Kazi Sabyasachi and granddaughter of Bangladesh National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. She was awarded Nazrul Award 2013 by the Nazrul Institute.

Kazi Sabyasachi was a Bengali elocutionist. He was the eldest surviving son of one of the most prolific Bengali poets of the 20th century Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Nazrul Academy is an academic research institution devoted to the study of the national poet of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and his works including Nazrul Geeti. The academy is located in Moghbazar, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
