The Mausoleum of Kazi Nazrul Islam is a mausoleum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It marks the grave of the 20th century writer, poet and musician Kazi Nazrul Islam, Bangladesh's national poet. He died 29 August 1976.

Bangladesh became independent on 16 December 1971. Then on 24 May 1972, after getting permission from the Indian government, then Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought Kazi Nazrul Islam and his family from Kolkata to Dhaka. [1] Then the poet started living in Bangladesh with his family. He wrote a song with the lyrics "Mosjideri Pashe Amay Kobor Diyo Bhai, Jeno Gore Thekeo Moazziner Azan Shunte Pai" (lit.'Bury me next to the mosque, brother, so that I can hear the call to adhan from the muezzin '). [2] He was admitted to PG Hospital of Dhaka (now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University) on 23 July 1975. After getting citizenship on 18 February 1976, his physical condition started to deteriorate. After his death on 29 August 1976, he was buried next to a mosque established in 1966, which was the central mosque of University of Dhaka, as per the wishes of the song he wrote. [3] [4]

The foundation stone of the project to convert Kazi Nazrul Islam's tomb area into a mausoleum was laid on 25 May 1999[ citation needed ] and the mausoleum was inaugurated on 27 August 2009 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ten years later. [5] On 16 February 2011, two persons named Jaynath Nandi and Debashish Bhattacharya from West Bengal traveled to Bangladesh on a bicycle with soil from the grave of Kazi Nazrul Islam's wife Pramila Kazi located in Churulia. On 28 February, they placed that soil on the grave of Kazi Nazrul Islam. [6] The mausoleum complex, designed by Muzharul Islam, covers the tombs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan, Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury and Abdul Matin Chowdhury. [7]

Kazi Nazrul Islam was a Bengali poet, short story writer, journalist, lyricist and musician. He is the national poet of Bangladesh. Nazrul produced a large body of poetry, music, messages, novels, and stories with themes, that included equality, justice, anti-imperialism, humanity, rebellion against oppression and religious devotion. Nazrul Islam's activism for political and social justice as well as writing a poem titled as "Bidrohī", meaning "the rebel" in Bengali, earned him the title of "Bidrohī Kôbi". His compositions form the avant-garde music genre of Nazrul Gīti.

Nazrul Sangeet, also Nazrul Geeti, refers to the songs written and composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam. Nazrul Geeti incorporate revolutionary notions as well as more spiritual, philosophical and romantic themes. Nazrul wrote and composed nearly 4,000 songs, which are widely popular in Bangladesh and India. Some of the most notable Nazrul Sangeet include Notuner Gaan, the national marching song of Bangladesh and O Mon Romzaner Oi Rozar Sheshe, a Bengali Islamic song on the festival of the Bengali celebration of Chand Raat and Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Bangla Academy is the official regulatory body of the Bengali language in Bangladesh. It is an autonomous institution funded by the Government of Bangladesh that fosters the Bengali language, literature and culture, works to develop and implement national language policy and conducts original research in Bengali. Abdul Mannan Syed was a Bangladeshi poet, and critic. He is known for his considerable research works on Kazi Nazrul Islam, Jibanananda Das, Farrukh Ahmad, Syed Waliullah, Manik Bandyopadhyay, Bishnu De, Samar Sen, Roquiah Sakhawat Hossain, Abdul Ghani Hazari, Muhammad Wajed Ali, Prabodh Chandra Sen. From 2002 to 2004, he held the position of Executive Director of Nazrul Institute.

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is a government-financed public university of Bangladesh. It is also known as JKKNIU. It is located at Namapara-Battala, Trishal which is a suburb of Mymensingh, some 22 kilometres from Mymensingh urban center.The university was established in 2006. At present more than eight thousand students are studying in the university.

"Bidrohi" is a popular revolutionary Bengali poem and the most famous poem written by Kazi Nazrul Islam in December 1921. Originally published in several periodicals, the poem was first collected in October 1922 in a volume titled Agnibeena: the first anthology of Nazrul's poems. Many have seen, in this poem, elements of romanticism, heroism, and love. Syed Ali Ahsan wrote that the poem was inspired by Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself".

<i>Biography of Nazrul</i> 2020 Bangladeshi film

Biography of Nazrul is a 2020 full-length documentary film directed by Ferdous Khan. The film, produced by Al Amin Khan, is based on the illustrious life and work of Kazi Nazrul Islam, National Poet of Bangladesh, under the initiative of Dhaka-based Nazrul Center which was advised by Ikram Ahmed. The scenes of the film have been shot in the places where the memories of Kazi Nazrul Islam are scattered from his birth to his death. In the film, the biography of Kazi Nazrul Islam is narrated in the background voice of Asaduzzaman Noor and Progya Laboni. The documentary was commercially released in theaters on 20 November 2020.

Atchala Ghar is a historical house. It is a memorial place related to Kazi Nazrul Islam. It is located on the Darshana–Mujibnagar road in Karpashdanga Union of Damurhuda Upazila, about 20 kilometers southwest of the district town of Chuadanga.
