Thomas Kagiso Mmusi (born 25 October 1965) [1] is a Botswana politician and businessman that has served as the Minister of Defence and Security since 2022. Prior to this,he was the Minister of Defence,Justice and Security from 2019 to 2022. He is the son of Peter Mmusi,Vice President of Botswana from 1983 to 1992.
Mmusi attended the Management Development Programme at the University of Cape Town Business School,and he founded the holding company Pula Holdings. [1] He was asked to stand for Parliament following the death of his father in 1994,but he declined to pursue business. In 2008,he served on the Botswana Democratic Party finance committee,and he was chosen as the party's deputy treasurer. [2] In the 2019 general election,Mmusi was elected as MP for Gabane-Mmankgodi with 12,204 votes out of 19,209 votes cast. [3] After his election,Mmusi was chosen as Minister of Defence,Justice and Security in the cabinet of President Mokgweetsi Masisi. [4]
While speaking at a police conference in February 2022,Mmusi encouraged police forces to show less restraint in response to rising crime and to "eliminate" criminals. [5] [6] [7] The statement was made shortly after a random attack on cabinet minister Edwin Dikoloti. One week after the statement was made,state security controversially killed 10 suspects of a robbery. Mmusi clarified his statement in March 2022,emphasizing vigilance rather than aggression. [5]
In 2022,the Ministry of Justice was created as a new ministry,and Mmusi was designated as the Minister of Defence and Security. [8]

Unity Dow is a Motswana lawyer,human rights activist,specially elected member of parliament,and a writer. She formerly served as a judge on the High Court of Botswana and in various Botswana government ministries. Born in the Bechuanaland Protectorate to a seamstress and a farmer,who insisted on their children obtaining an education,Dow grew up in a traditional rural village before modernisation. She earned a law degree in 1983 from the University of Botswana and Swaziland,though her studies were completed in Swaziland and University of Edinburgh,Scotland,as Botswana had no law school at the time. After her graduation,Dow opened the first all-woman law firm in Botswana and in 1997 became the first woman to be appointed as a judge to the country's High Court.
Mompati Sebogodi Merafhe was a Botswana politician who was Vice-President of Botswana from 2008 to 2012. He was a retired Lieutenant-General and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 2008.

Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi is the fifth and current President of Botswana,serving since 2018. He served as the 8th Vice President of Botswana from 12 November 2014 to 1 April 2018. He was a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly for the Moshupa-Manyana constituency from 2009 to 2018. Initially having a good relationship with former President Ian Khama,who appointed Masisi as Vice President,the two later clashed over a ban on elephant hunting,and Khama has since accused Masisi of having "stifled dissent". Coming to power in the 2019 elections,the opposition claimed irregularities and electoral fraud,however an observation mission from the African Union reported that the elections were conducted transparently and met international standards.

The government also saw controversy for its support of bills that would grant it additional espionage powers and regulate journalists.
