Kampala Boy is the first studio album by Ugandan musician Flex D'Paper, released on 10 December 2021. The album features guest appearances from Swae Lee on the intro and songs with Navio, Fik Fameica, A Pass, Keko, Shena skies, Wake the Poet, Mozelo Kidz, Kemishan, Lagum the rapper. The production includes Aethan Music, Mio Made, Sam Lamara, Wake the Poet, Bad Chwezi and Lucian.

Background

In 2017, Flex D'Paper released his first compilation, the mixtape Not for Sale . The mixtape was released on 27 June 2017 digitally, and on 14 October 2017, physical copies were launched. The annual MTN UG Hip Hop awards awarded Flex D'Paper with the Mixtape of the year award [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] The same year of release, the single Day Ones off the mixtape that features Navio (rapper) and Martha Smallz was as well nominated at the Buzz Teeniez Awards.[ citation needed ]

Singles and promotion

The album had three singles released as a build up to the album. Yenze Aliko, a song released in 2017 was the first release off the album. The single saw Flex D'Paper win the Song of the year award at the MTN UG Hip Hop awards 2019 [8] [9] and also got nominated at the Hipipo Music Awards 2020 [10] [11] [12] for the same single, Yenze Aliko.[ citation needed ]

In 2019, another single, Level Up was released and a year after, it went ahead to win the Video Of The Year award 2020 at the MTN UG Hiphop awards [13] [14] [15] and also got nominated for the Hip Hop Song Of The Year award at the Hipipo Music Awards 2020 [16] [17] [18] [19]

During 2020, Flex D'Paper released a collaboration with Ugandan singer and songwriter Shena Skies, titled Mbikwasagwe. The song went on to win music awards in 2021 as well as get nominated at various awards. [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27] [28]

Before releasing the album, Flex D'Paper announced the release date for the Kampala Boy Album as 10 December 2021 as well as sharing the artwork and track list. Various media houses in Uganda talked about the announcement. [29] [30] [31] [32] This built anticipation for the release. [3] [33] [34] [35] [36] [37]

Critical reception

Kampala Boy on its release on 10 December 2021, received favorable reviews for its diverse sound. The songs produced on the project range from Hip Hop to Afro Beat, Dancehall and EDM. [38] The artists features include artists like A Pass Navio (rapper) Fik Fameica Keko as well as new acts and a Swae Lee guest appearance on the album intro. [39] [40] [41] On the day of release, the album was trending on Ugandan Twitter and Flex D'paper shared the links on his socials. [42]

Cheptegei, a song celebrating Ugandan athlete Joshua Cheptegei was one of the many highlights off the album. The song features Navio (rapper) Fik Fameica and Mozelo Kidz. [43] [44]

Commercial performance

The album debuted on the Apple Music ITunes Charts all genres countdown at number 26 and later climbed to number 3 on the same day. [45] Within one week of release, Kampala Boy had made it to several notable streaming apps charts including deezer and Audiomack.

Awards

The album won the 2023 UG Hip Hop Awards 2023 Album of the year award. [46] [47] [48] [49] [50] [51]

Lillian Mbabazi is a Rwandan-Ugandan recording artist and entertainer. She was born in Uganda to Rwandan Parents. According to a Ugandan publicist at Bryan Morel Publications, Lilian's music style is neo-soul associated with R&B Band tendencies. She was a member of Blu*3. In 2014, she was one of the featured artists in the second season of "Coke Studio Africa".

Michael Ross Kakooza is a Ugandan Rhythm and blues musician and dancer.

St. Nelly-Sade, born Nsubuga Nelson, is a Ugandan Lugaflow rapper. He has performed on national and international stages including Bayimba International Festival of the Arts, LaBa! Arts Festival, Uganda Hip Hop Summit, as well as performances in South Sudan, Arusha, Tanzania and in various regions all over east Africa.

I-Am Enygma, better known by his stage name Enygma, is a Ugandan rapper, record producer, executive producer and entrepreneur known for his wordplay laced rhymes and always wearing a mask on his face so as to conceal his identity. He rose to fame in December 2010 following the runaway success of his single, Hustler's Night featuring The mith, Keko and Navio. This was followed up by even more celebrated hits in 2011, namely F.U.M.E.M.E. and Ten Reasons. He also represents one third of occasional rap group Klarity alongside The Mith and Lyrikal Proof. Also frequently collaborates with other artists such as Ruyonga, Maurice Kirya and Lyrical G. As an entrepreneur, Enygma conducts private business, mostly outside of the entertainment industry.

Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Flex D'Paper was part of the 2014 UG Cypher including the finest Ugandan rappers: Navio, Keko, Big Tril, Don MC, AirporTaxi rappers St. Nelly Sade, GNL Zamba, DJ Global, JB, The Mith, Ruyonga, and Atlas.

Undercover Brothers Ug also simply known as Undercover Brothers are a Ugandan music duo composed of guitarist and vocalist Jay K Mulungi and vocalist Timothy Kirya, whose music career sparked off when they won the auditions and represented Uganda in the sixth season of East Africa's biggest singing competition Tusker Project Fame. The duo released their first album titled At Dawn in December 2014. In December 2016, their song Nsikatila was nominated in the Best R&B Song category at HiPipo Music Awards (#HMA) 2017.

Jemimah Sanyu, also known as the Stage Gladiator, is a Ugandan musician, performer, producer, and voice coach. She has a commanding stage presence with a very strong voice. Sanyu has met people like President Yoweri Museveni while singing at the I am a Ugandan album premier. She has shared a stage with top African stars like Habib Koite, Navio, Joanita Kawalya of Afrigo Band, and Juliana Kanyomozi. and many other African stars.

Sheebah Karungi, professional also known as Queen Karma and Sheebah, is a Ugandan musician, dancer, actress and feminist activist. She debuted her acting career in Queen of Katwe as Shakira. After quitting Obsessions, a dance group she joined in 2006, she started making music and later rose to recognition upon the release of her hit single "Ice Cream". In 2014, she released her debut project Ice Cream, a five-track EP which did well commercially and led her to win back-to-back HiPipo Music Awards Best Female Artist in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. She also won the Artist of the Year award twice, in 2017, 2018, and 2019 at the HiPipo Music Awards.

<i>Not for Sale</i> (mixtape) 2017 mixtape by Flex DPaper

Not for Sale is the first solo mixtape by Ugandan recording artist and record producer Flex D'Paper. A follow-up to Eviction Notice mixtape by Rapaholix in 2012 that had songs from Flex and fellow members. Not For Sale was released on 27 June 2017 by his imprint Rapaholix Music on the TheTribe Ug website, a popular hip hop platform online in Uganda.

Fik Fameica also known as Fresh Bwoy, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter. He is popularly known for showcasing his versatality in different genres including Hip-Hop, Afrobeats, Afropop and dancehall. His musical debut came in 2015 with "Pistol" under the Black Man Town music label, led by a Ugandan music icon Geosteady. His later songs, "Salawo" and "Mbega Wa Bbaala" gained him a recording contract with Kama Ivien Management. His club hit "Batuwulira" followed by "Byenyenya" made him the most booked Ugandan artist in 2017. Fik won awards in Uganda and East Africa and went on to win Uganda's most popular artist in 2017. In 2018, he was crowned Breakthrough Artist, Best in Hip-Hop and Best Rap Song for his track "Kutama" at the annual HiPipo Awards.

Delivad Julio and Mr. Lee sing with soothing soft RnB vocals while Bobby Lash B2C sings the Ragga and dancehall vibes. The three formed B2C entertainment from school as they were students at Crested secondary school in Makindye Division in Kampala. Because of their consistency, the trio decided to start professional music in 2016 with their breakthrough song known as Tokigeza produced by Diggy Baur.
