Kannan M. Moudgalya (born 21 March 1958) is an Indian professor of Chemical Engineering, Systems and Control, and Education Technology at IIT Bombay.

Education

Kannan earned his Bachelor of Technology degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras with distinction in 1980 and master's degree in electrical engineering from Rice University, Houston in 1985. He received his doctoral degree on same year in chemical engineering from Rice University, Houston. [1] [2]

Research career and spoken tutorials

Kannan M. Moudgalya is a professor of chemical engineering, systems and control, and educational technology at IIT Bombay. He was a visiting professor at the University of Alberta. [1]

He has held the posts of associate dean (R&D), head of Application Software Cell and head of the Centre for Distance Engineering Education Programme, at IIT Bombay. He is a member of the Standing Committee of the National Mission on Education through ICT, MHRD, Government of India. He is a life member of International Society for Technology in Education and Computer Society of India, and a member of IEEE. [3]

He has also written two textbooks: (1) Digital Control, pub-lished by John Wiley & Sons, Chichester and (2) Optimization: theory and practice, jointly with Prof. Mohan C. Joshi, published by Narosa, New Delhi. He has published a large number of papers in refereed international journals and conferences in the areas of mathematical modelling, control and simulation. He is notoriously known for his rigorous instructorship in the Design Project course at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, which has inspired many startups.

He recently retired from IIT Bombay which leaves a void in the IITB and FOSSEE community. More recently, he has taken an initiative in teaching convicts in prison using Spoken Tutorials.

Fellowships and awards

Moudgalya has been awarded as "Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Recognition for Re-Engineering India 2020" in the Farmer Welfare/Industry/Institutional Category for having paved the path for multi lingualism by envisaging and curating spoken tutorials in various Indian languages for education, employment and empowerment. [6] [7] [8]

The Spoken Tutorial project received Reimagine Education Award in 2015, by coming first in Nurturing Employability category sponsored by QS and Wharton School. [9] He has also received Google MOOCs Research Award for Extending the Offline Capability of Spoken Tutorial Methodology in 2015. [10]

The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are Centrally Funded Technical Institutes located across India. They are under the ownership of the Ministry of Education of the Government of India and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Act declares them as Institutes of National Importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance as the country's premier institutions in the field of technology. The act currently lists twenty-three IITs. Each IIT has autonomy and is linked to others through a common council called the IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The Minister of Education of India is the ex officio chairperson of the IIT Council.

Uday B. Desai is an Indian academician and the founding director of Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. He is a Professor Emeritus in Electrical engineering Chancellor ICFAI Dehradun, Chancellor Anurag University, Hyderabad Honorary Distinguished Professor Plaksha University and a Strategic Consultant for TSDSI. He served as the director of IIT Hyderabad from June 2009 to July 2019, and is credited for taking it to rank among the top 10 engineering colleges in India in the NIRF engineering ranking. He was mentor director of IIT Bhilai from May 2016 to February 2017 and mentor director for IIIT Chittoor 2013–2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">P. K. Kelkar</span> Indian scientist

Purushottam Kashinath Kelkar (1909-1990) was an Indian scientist who is best remembered for being the founding director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, which was established in 1959. He was also involved in the planning process for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai and served as its third director, for a period of 4 years. Kelkar was instrumental in securing USA's technical collaboration in the establishment of IIT Kanpur, by persuading the then USA ambassador, John Kenneth Galbraith to locate the fledgeling institution on the outskirts of Kanpur, in North India. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Bhushan in 1970.

He is known for his pioneering studies on computer vision and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. the National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy. He is also a fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Pramod P. Wangikar is an Indian chemical engineer and a professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Known for his studies in the field of bioenergy, Wangikar is a recipient of the Sartorius India Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2006.

Amit Agrawal is an Indian engineer and an institute chair professor at the department of mechanical engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He leads a group of scientists who are involved in the development of next-generation diagnostic microdevices.

Ashwin Gumaste is an Indian computer engineer and institute chair professor at the department of computer science and engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He is known for his work on Carrier Ethernet Switch routers—the largest technology transfer between any IIT and industry.

E-Yantra is a robotics focused educational outreach initiative of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. It is funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT). The goal of e-Yantra is to complement existing engineering and robotics Higher Education systems worldwide and develop engineers capable of solving local problems across a variety of domains such as: Agriculture, Disaster Response, Defense, Manufacturing, Home, Smart Cities and Service Industries through technology.
