Karen Riese Fraser [1] (born September 12,1944) is an American politician who served as a Democratic Washington State Senator for 24 years,representing the 22nd Legislative District,which includes Olympia,Lacey,Tumwater,and northern Thurston County. She held many senior leadership positions in the Senate including:Democratic Caucus Chair;Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Committee;Chair of the Capital Budget;chair of the Senate's administrative committee;and chair of policy committees pertaining to environment,energy,water,parks and recreation,shorelines,Puget Sound,and state employee pensions. She served on the Rules Committee and on many other policy committees. She was a leader in state level international relations. [2]
Prior to serving in the Senate,she served four years as State Representative. She served as a local elected official for 15 years,including becoming the first woman mayor of Lacey,the second woman Thurston County Commissioner,and the first woman President of the Washington State Association of Counties.
Fraser was an unsuccessful candidate for Lieutenant Governor in the 2016 primary election,which she ultimately lost to fellow Democrat Cyrus Habib.
In October 2017,the Olympia Woodland Trail was renamed to the Karen Fraser Woodland Trail in her honor. [3]
Fraser graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a Master of Public Administration from the university's Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs. She was founder of the Legislative International Caucus.
Fraser was born in Seattle and currently resides in Thurston County,Washington. She has one daughter and two grandchildren. She enjoys outdoor recreation,such as hiking,sailboat racing,marathon running,and travel.

The Chehalis Western Trail is a rail trail in Thurston County,Washington and is the longest shared-use path in the region. It occupies an abandoned railroad corridor that was once used by the historic Weyerhaeuser-owned Chehalis Western Railroad. The rail line was converted to a bicycle and walking trail and intersects with the 14.5-mile (23.3 km) Yelm-Rainier-Tenino Trail and the 4.7-mile (7.6 km) Karen Fraser Woodland Trail.

The Majority Coalition Caucus (MCC) was a caucus formed on December 10,2012,by all 23 Republican members of the Washington State Senate and two Democratic senators. Its membership constituted a majority of the chamber's 49 members,allowing it to take control of the Senate from the Democratic caucus whose members had previously formed a majority. The MCC,operating much like a coalition government,offered an equal number of committee leadership positions to Republicans and Democrats. Senate Democrats accepted only three of the nine positions offered them. The Republicans strengthened their position by gaining one seat in the 2013 election,but lost its majority following a special election in November 2017. The coalition has 23 Republicans and one self-identified Democratic senator,Tim Sheldon. On November 15,2017,the Majority Coalition Caucus returned to being the state Senate Republican Caucus.
The Karen Fraser Woodland Trail is a 4.7-mile (7.6 km) paved rail trail in Thurston County,Washington that connects the cities of Olympia and Lacey along the abandoned Burlington Northern corridor. The trail opened in 2007 and connects with the Chehalis Western Trail at the border between the two cities. The Olympia trailhead features a sustainably designed shelter and restroom with a living roof and a rain garden and parts of the trail run alongside Indian Creek.
