Karen Melchior (born 15 October 1980) [3] is a Danish lawyer and politician, formerly of the Social Liberal Party, who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament since 2019.
Melchior was a member of the Copenhagen Municipal Council. [4] In the council, she served on the Social Committee and the Health and Care Committee [4] from the local elections of 2017 as a member of the Social Liberal Party. [5]
Melchior ran on the Danish Social Liberal Party's ticket in the European Parliament Election of 2014, where she was elected to the position of first alternate MEP for the party. [6]
Melchior was eventually elected to the European Parliament in 2019. [7] She has since been serving on the Committee on Legal Affairs and on the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality.
In addition to her committee assignments, Melchior is part of the parliament's delegations to the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee, the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee and the EU-Georgia Parliamentary Association Committee, as well as to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly. [8] She is also a member of the European Parliament Intergroup on Anti-Corruption, [9] the European Parliament Intergroup on LGBT Rights, [10] the European Internet Forum, [11] the Responsible Business Conduct Working Group, [12] and the Spinelli Group. [13]
Melchior resigned from the Social Liberal Party in August 2022 but remains a member of the European Parliament. [14]
In 2021, it was alleged that Melchior on several occasions harassed her assistants in her office in the European Parliament. At least three of her assistants ended up on sick leave due to the harassment. [15] In May 2022, her Danish party, the Social Liberal Party, requested her to resign from the European Parliament immediately and declared that she will not be allowed to run for the party for the next election to the European Parliament, [16] followed by her leaving the party.
The Folketing, also known as the Parliament of Denmark or the Danish Parliament in English, is the unicameral national legislature (parliament) of the Kingdom of Denmark—Denmark proper together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Established in 1849, until 1953 the Folketing was the lower house of a bicameral parliament, called the Rigsdag; the upper house was the Landsting. The Alternative is a green and pro-European political party in Denmark. The party was publicly launched on 27 November 2013 by former Minister of Culture Uffe Elbæk and Josephine Fock; Elbæk had been a parliamentarian for the Social Liberal Party. Of the 179 members of the Folketing, 175 were elected in Denmark proper, two in the Faroes and two in Greenland. The elections were called on 5 October following an ultimatum to the government by the Social Liberals due to the outcome of a report on the 2020 Danish mink cull by the Mink Commission, which was critical of the government. Voter turnout was 84% in Denmark, 48% in Greenland, and 71% in the Faroes, with a combined turnout of 84% for the realm as a whole.
