Karivellur Murali is a Malayalam language poet and playwright from Kerala, India. He has won many awards including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Drama, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship.

Life

Murali was born on 15 November 1955, to communist leader A. V. Kunhambu and K. Devayani at Karivellur in the then Malabar district. [1] Started career in Kannur Keltron from 1976, he retired on 30 November 2013 as Senior Stores Officer in Kannur Keltron. His wife is State Bank of India employee K. V. Komalavalli. He was the President of Keltron Employees Association (CITU) for 20 years.

Career in art and literature

Karivellur Murali started writing poems and songs from childhood. He started his acting career at the age of 10 by acting in the play Smarakam written by KK Eiyakkad and staged on Karivellur Martyrs' Day in 1966. [2] After that he played different characters in many plays. He actively collaborated in the theater activities of many regional art societies like Karivellur Janashakti, Karivellur Central Arts Club, Aroli Shantiprabha, Kallyassery Kavita Theatres, Kadamperi Yuvajana Kala Samiti etc. [2] He has been voicing characters in Akashvani radio dramas for 40 years. [2]

Karivellur Murali's first poetry collection Ente Chonna Mannain Pattu was published in 1982. The work contains a poem about the Karivellur struggle led by his father Kunhambu. At the age of twenty-one, he wrote the play Aparajitaran Ratti for the first time. The play received five awards at the Kannur district level competition conducted by Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad. In 1977, he wrote and directed the street play 'Patayottam', one of the first street plays of Kerala. [2] After that he became a prominent proponent of street theater, open air theater and Kala jatha movement in Kerala. [2]

In 1987, a theater group called Sangha Chetana was formed in Kannur. He was its founding secretary. [3] Later he led the Kannur Sangh Chetana for 17 years. Many of his works have been translated into other languages. [2] In 1998, Murali's play Che Guevera, staged by Sangha Chetana, won six state awards. [2] The play was performed in about three hundred venues in a year. [2] He has also written many poems and essays.

Murali composed plays and poems for the Kala Jathas (art walk) conducted by the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad for 25 years from 1980 to 2015. He also made theater activities active by collaborating with theater groups like Keltron Club, Kalyasseri Kavita Theatres and Aroli Shantiprabha. [2]

In 2003, he wrote and directed Rajita Madhu's one-act play 'Abu Backerinte umma paranjath (meaning:Abu Bakar's Umma Says)' which achieved a record of 2802 performances. [2]

He held several positions including Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangam District Secretary, President, State Secretary, Member of Executive Committee of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Member of Executive Committee of Kerala Press Academy etc. [2] In 2022 Karivellur Murali was selected as the secretary of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship is an honour presented by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Instituted in 1972, the fellowships are given to outstanding artistes who have contributed to the performing arts in the state. The awardees are decided after a general body meeting conducted by the Akademi panel members and are presented by the Governor of Kerala.

Savithri Sreedharan is an Indian theatre and film actress. She has been a part of several Calicut-based theatre groups for over forty years and made her film debut in 2018 in the film Sudani from Nigeria which earned her a Special Mention at the 66th National Film Awards. Samkutty Pattomkary is an Indian theatre director, playwright, scenic and light designer, screenwriter, and poet from Kallara, Kottayam District, India. He done more than 75 productions in Malayalam, English, Hindi and Kannada. He was a former Council Member of the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy. He completed his NDFA in painting from RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Thrippunithura, Kerala. Bachelor and Master in Theatre Arts from School Of Drama & Fine Arts, Thrissur, Kerala. He holds a Ph.D. in theatre arts from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was formerly an Executive Member of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi. In 2018 he received a State Award for his play Lalla by Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Government of Kerala. He is now settled in Thrissur.

Thayat Kunjananthan, commonly known as K. Thayat was an Indian writer of children's literature and plays in Malayalam–language. He has written 42 books and over a hundred radio plays. He was also a school teacher and has received various awards in the field of literature as well as central and state awards for excellence in teaching.

Malayalam drama, known as Natakam (നാടകം) in Malayalam, is an important genre of Malayalam literature. The origin of Malayalam drama can be traced back to various performing arts of Kerala such as Kathakali. Drama, as is understood now, is a borrowed art form in Kerala and started with the publication of the Malayalam translation of Abhijnana Shakuntalam in 1882. The field of Malayalam theatre and drama became active by the end of the 19th century. It played an active role in the early-20th-century Kerala reform movement.

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award is an award given by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, an autonomous organisation for the encouragement, preservation, and documentation of the performing arts of Kerala, set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala. Instituted in 1962, the awards are given in the categories of music, dance, theatre, other traditional arts, and for contribution/scholarship in performing arts. The award consists of Rs. 30,000, a citation and a plaque. The recipients of the award are also conferred the title Kalasree.

K. P. A. C. Sulochana was a popular Indian Malayalam playback singer, theatre and film actress from Kerala. She has won several awards including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship. She has also wrote a book called Arangile Anubhavangal.
