The SL.1 Akar (Gnat) was a Polish glider built to compete in the First Polish Glider Contest, held in 1923. It dominated the contest with its pilots achieving first and second places.
Reports of the first German glider contest, held at the Wasserkuppe in the late summer of 1920, generated considerable interest in Poland, leading to the First Polish Glider Contest at Czarna Góra between 30 August and 13 September 1923. The contest was not a great success, limited by novice designers and pilots and a poor site, but the SL.1 Akar was by far the most successful entrant. It was designed in 1922 by Adam Karpiński, a student in the Sekcja Lotnicza (SL), the aviation section of Warsaw Technical University and was built by other SL students. [1]
The all-wood Akar was a cantilever monoplane with a three-part wing built around twin spars. The wing had a rectangular plan centre-section with trapezoidal outer panels and was fabric covered. [1] [2]
It was mounted on top of two parallel open frames, spaced about 2 m (6 ft 7 in) apart, forming its fuselage. These each had longitudinal straight upper and curved lower chords interconnected by short oblique web members and were braced together by three transverse struts. Two, one from each of the two forward-most web members, carried the pilot's seat. The chords of each frame converged at the rear, where the third transverse member carried the empennage. The tailplane was confined between the fuselage frames but the elevators projected beyond, carrying balances. There were no fins but twin roughly rectangular rudders. A forward cross-axle extending beyond the fuselage frames gave the large wheels a wide track and the upward-curving lower chords acted as skids to prevent nose-overs. [1] [2]
Though most of the gliders entered into the contest had not flown before its opening, the Akar had made its first flight on 24 August 1923, piloted by the designer's brother, Tadeusz. Seven flights were made before the contest began, flown by Karpiński and by Ryszard Bartel; the longest of these lasted 96 seconds and was made by Bartel. These test flights revealed good handling, with effective and balanced controls. [1]
The Akar dominated the contest, flown both by Karpiński who was placed first and by Bartel, placed second. Its longest flight lasted 186 seconds; it made a flight of over 3 km (1.9 mi) and gained an altitude of 20 m (66 ft).
In the following spring the Akar was used by the SL to look for good gliding sites in the Babia Góra. Equipped with skis, it made a flight on 3 April 1924 (another source gives the date as 8 April [2] ) which lasted 325 s, covered about 2.5 km (1.6 mi) and set a Polish record which stood for over four years. [1] It crashed either at the end of this flight [2] or in a later one. [1] After the crash, the glider was redesigned by Stanisław Prauss as the Akar II, with a rectangular section, ply-covered fuselage and a new empennage. It was entered for the Second Polish Polish Glider Contest of 1925, though it did not appear there. [1] Though Cynk reports that the Akar II was built, another source claims that the students were blocked from using the University workshop and no rebuilding of the Akar occurred. Its remains were destroyed in the autumn of 1925. [2]

The Rogalski and Wigura R.W.1 was designed and built by a pair of students at Warsaw Technical University in 1927. The single example was a two-seat parasol-wing monoplane which entered two national competitions, served the Warsaw Academic Aeroclub and also towed an advertising banner.
The Zalewski W.Z.II was a simple glider designed and built in Poland in 1912 by Władysław Zalewski who, after Poland regained its independence in 1918, became a well-known designer of both aircraft and aircraft engines.
The AMA, named after its designers, was a one-off motor glider built in Poland in the mid-1930s. Its development was abandoned after early tests revealed incurable engine-mounting vibration problems.
The ITS-8 was a Polish twin-boom motor glider flown in 1936. Two prototypes were completed but production was prevented by the German invasion of Poland in 1939.
The Błażyński Polon was a competitor in the First Polish Glider Contest, held in the late summer of 1923. It was of advanced aerodynamical design, showed promise but was wrecked before the best winds arrived.
The Kubicki Ikub I, which some sources refer to as the Ikub Ia, was a Polish glider built to compete in the first Polish glider contest. It was placed third behind two Karpiński SL.1 Akars but gained the second prize and also made what may have been the first nighttime glider flight.
The Tułacz M.1 was a Polish glider which competed in the First Polish Glider Contest in 1923. It had some advanced features but its unconventional control system may have caused the landing accident at the end of its first and only flight.
The Cywiński Lublin I and II were very similar Polish gliders, designed and built for the 1923 First Polish Glider Contest.
The Jach Żabuś was a Polish glider designed to compete in the 1923 First Polish Glider Contest. It lacked vertical flying surfaces, had an unusual control system and made only one short flight. Rebuilt with conventional tail and controls, it won the distance flown prize at the second contest, held in 1925.
The Kućfir Pirat was a Polish glider designed to compete in the 1923 First Polish Glider Contest. Though it had flown earlier it could manage only one very brief flight at the Contest, ending in a destructive crash.

The Czerwiński and Jaworski CWJ was a basic training glider designed and flown in Poland in 1931. Between eighty to one hundred examples of it and an improved variant, the CWJ-bis Skaut, were built.
The Czerwiński CW 8 was a mid-1930s Polish open-frame basic training glider. Its design was advanced and its price low, but its stalling characteristics were too dangerous for beginners, so the thirty-plus examples completed were rapidly withdrawn from use. Two were subsequently modified, one with greater span and the other with a small engine.
The Warsztaty Szybowcowe Mewa was a Polish, high performance, two seat sailplane flown in 1936 and built in small numbers.
The Siegel MS 1 was a very light, simple, foot-launched glider designed, financed, built and flown by a Polish schoolteacher in the 1923 summer holidays. It made some short hops but was easily damaged.
The Siegel MS 2 was a Polish, amateur-built glider incorporating lessons learned from his first design. It first flew in 1924 but had only a brief career. In 1925 an improved variant, the MS 3, flew briefly.
