Kashinath Ghanekar (14 August 1930 - 2 March 1986 [1] [2] ) was a popular stage actor and dental surgeon. [1]

Early life

Ghanekar was born in the Chiplun and did his schooling and higher studies in Chiplun, Maharashtra, India.[ citation needed ]

Personal life

He married twice. He was married to Irawati M. Bhide, [3] a gynaecologist and obstetrician. [4] His first marriage was childfree and ended in divorce. He subsequently married a much younger Kanchan, the daughter of Marathi actress Sulochana Latkar. This marriage was harmonious, and after his death, Kanchan penned a biography titled Nath Ha Maza, meaning "such was my husband". [5] [6]

Career

Ghanekar was the first superstar of the Marathi stage with a lot of glamour, and he was the highest paid star from the years 1960 to 1980. [7] He appeared in Marathi films [8] in the 1960s. In addition to Marathi stage and movies, he appeared in Hindi movies such as Abhilasha opposite Nanda and Dadi Maa where he played the role of the son of Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai.

The role that made him a popular actor was that of Sambhaji in the play "Raigadala Jevha Jaag Yete" (When Raigad awakens) written by the play writer, Vasant Kanetkar. Most notable character ever played by him was "Lalya" in the play Ashroonchi Zhali Phule. Some of the other noted plays he acted in are - Ithe Oshalala Mrutyu, Garambicha Bapu, Anandi Gopal, Shitu, Tujhe Aahe Tujpashi, Sundar Mi Honar, Madhumanjiri etc. [9]

The film Madhuchandra (in 1968) made Ghanekar, a noted stage actor, a major Marathi film star. [10] One of his most popular films in Marathi is the mystery movie Ha Khel Savlyancha with Asha Kale.

Death and legacy

Ghanekar died of a heart attack during one of the tours of his plays, at his hotel room at Amravati.

Five unique characters played in this drama To Mee Navhech made him famous in Marathi theatre and Maharashtra. He also performed Aurangzeb's role in a play Ithe Oshalala Mrutyu based on the death of Sambhaji Raje Bhosale. He was the owner of Natyasampada, a Marathi drama production organization.

Bhalchandra Nilkanth Purandare, was an Indian gynaecologist. He was the son of Dr. Nilkanth Anant Purandare. He was the director of the Dr. N.A. Purandare Medical Centre for Family Welfare and Research, Mumbai. He served as the president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1973 to 1976 and the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynecological Society (MOGS) from 1966 to 1968. <i>Pathlaag</i> 1964 film by Raja Paranjape

Pathlaag is a 1964 Indian Marathi-language thriller film produced and directed by Raja Paranjape. It is an adaptation of the Jayant Deokule novel Asha Parat Yete. The film stars Kashinath Ghanekar and Bhavana. It was a commercial success, and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. The film was later remade in Tamil as Idhaya Kamalam (1965) and in Hindi as Mera Saaya (1966).

Subodh Bhave played the role of Kashinath Ghanekar, with Sonali Kulkarni, Vaidehi Parashurami, Sumeet Raghavan and Nandita Patkar in supporting roles.
