Riau is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the central eastern coast of Sumatra along the Strait of Malacca. The province shares land borders with North Sumatra to the northwest,West Sumatra to the west,and Jambi to the south,and a maritime border with the Riau Islands and the country of Malaysia to the east. It is the second-largest province in the island of Sumatra after South Sumatra,and is slightly larger than Jordan. According to the 2020 census,Riau had a population of 6,394,087 across a land area of 89,935.90 km²;the official estimate of population as of mid-2022 was 6,614,384. The province comprises ten regencies and two cities,with Pekanbaru serving as the capital and largest city.
Siak,is a regency (kabupaten) of Riau Province,on the island of Sumatra,Indonesia. It has an area of 8,556.09 km2 and had a population of 376,742 at the 2010 Census and 457,940 at the 2020 Census;the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 477,550,comprising 246,186 males and 231,364 females. The administrative centre of the regency is located at Siak Sri Indrapura. The northern part of this regency contains a large part of the Bukit Batu Biosphere Reserve.
Bengkalis was the seat (capital) of Bengkalis Regency in the Riau province of Indonesia until 8 July 2013,when it became an independent city. It is located on Bengkalis Island. The city had a population of 66,211.
The 2018 Riau gubernatorial election took place on 27 June 2018 as part of the simultaneous local elections. It was held to elect the governor of Riau along with their deputy,whilst members of the provincial council will be re-elected in 2019.

Annas Maamun is an Indonesian politician who was imprisoned for corruption who served as governor of Riau between February and September 2014. He was previously the regent of Rokan Hilir Regency between 2006 and 2014. His term as governor was ended by a corruption scandal,which led to him being imprisoned for six years. After his release in 2020,he was once more arrested for a bribery case from his time as governor,and sentenced to another year in prison in 2022.
Saleh Djasit is an Indonesian politician and military officer who served as the governor of Riau between 1998 and 2003,and as a member of the People's Representative Council from 1997 to 1998 and 2004 to 2008. He was also regent of Kampar Regency between 1986 and 1996. He was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison in 2008 for a corruption case,although he was released on parole after 2.5 years.
Subrantas Siswanto was an Indonesian military officer who served as the governor of Riau between 1978 and 1980,and previously as the regent of Kampar Regency between 1967 and 1978.

She rose to fame after releasing the single "Laksamana Raja di Laut" (2003),which earned her the nickname "Queen of Indonesian Malay Dangdut". In 2020,Bustami ran for the Bengkalis Regency regional elections as a candidate for deputy regent but lost to Kasmarni.
Edy Nasution is an Indonesian politician and former military officer. He briefly served as the governor of Riau between November 2023 and February 2024,replacing the previous governor Syamsuar who had resigned. He was previously Syamsuar's deputy between 2019 and 2023. He served in the Indonesian Army for over 30 years prior to entering politics,and reached the rank of brigadier general.
Bagus Santoso is an Indonesian politician,journalist,and writer who currently serves as 5th Deputy Regent of Bengkalis Regency from 26 February 2021. He formerly served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Riau from 2009 until 2019 and as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Bengkalis from 2004 until 2009.
