Katayoun M. Copeland (born 1966/1967) [1] is an American lawyer and politician who was an assistant U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia from 2019 to 2023. She was the district attorney of Delaware County,Pennsylvania from 2018 to 2019.
Copeland was born in Upper Darby Township,Pennsylvania to an Iranian father and an American mother. [2] She was raised in Iran from 1973 to 1980. [2] She graduated from The Baldwin School in 1985. [3] She completed an undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College. [2] She earned a Juris Doctor degree from Temple University Beasley School of Law. [2]
In 1992,Copeland joined the Delaware County district attorney's office as an assistant district attorney in its trial division. [2] She worked under the county's first female district attorney,Patricia Holstein. [2] She later became chief of drug enforcement in 2000. [2] In 2004,she became deputy district attorney. [2] In 2011,Copeland joined the United States Attorney as a prosector of drug cases. [2] She worked under Louis D. Lappen,the acting district attorney for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. [2] In 2018,she returned to Delaware County as its district attorney. [2] A Republican,she was selected by the county board of judges to succeed Jack Whelan. [4] The term expired in 2019. [4] She ran for election for a full four-year term in 2019 and was defeated in a close election by Democratic candidate Jack Stollsteimer. Delaware County, colloquially referred to as Delco, is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. With a population of 576,830 as of the 2020 census, it is the fifth-most populous county in Pennsylvania and the third-smallest in area. The county was created on September 26, 1789, from part of Chester County and named for the Delaware River.

William Miller McSwain is an American attorney and a former United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, a position he held from April 6, 2018 to January 22, 2021. He was nominated to the post by President Donald Trump. After leaving his position as U.S. Attorney, McSwain entered private practice at Duane Morris LLP. He then ran, unsuccessfully, for the Republican nomination for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2022 after which he again returned to private practice.
Mary Gay Scanlon is an American attorney and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, she has represented Pennsylvania's 5th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2019. The district is based in Delaware County, a mostly suburban county west of Philadelphia, and also includes parts of South and Southwest Philadelphia and slivers of Chester and Montgomery counties. Scanlon spent the final two months of 2018 as the member for Pennsylvania's 7th congressional district. She was elected to both positions on November 6, 2018. That day, she ran in a special election in the old 7th to serve out the term of her predecessor, Pat Meehan, and in a regular election for a full two-year term in the new 5th. She was sworn in as the member for the 7th on November 13, 2018, and transferred to the 5th on January 3, 2019.
The 2022 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election was held on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor of Pennsylvania and lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania. State Attorney General Josh Shapiro defeated State Senator Doug Mastriano by 14.8 percentage points to succeed term-limited incumbent governor Tom Wolf (D). Primaries were held on May 17, 2022. Shapiro won the Democratic nomination after running unopposed and Mastriano won the Republican nomination with 44% of the vote. Mastriano's nomination drew attention due to his far-right political views.
