Kathleen Cummings (born September 5, 1961) is a retired professional tennis player from the U.S.
Cummings, who comes from Richmond, Virginia, was a three-time All-American tennis player at the University of Colorado. She made the semi-finals of the AIAW Championships in 1982 and transferred to the University of Texas for the final year of her college career, winning the 1984 Southwest Conference singles title. [2]
While still in college, Cummings began playing on the professional circuit as an amateur and had her breakthrough when she upset Virginia Wade at the 1981 Avon Championships of Seattle. [3] At the 1983 US Open, Cummings had wins over Lee Duk-hee and Mary-Lou Piatek to make the third round, where she lost to eighth seed Hana Mandlíková. [4] In 1984 she had her best year on the circuit, with semi-final appearances at Virginia Slims tournaments in Nashville and Richmond, as well as the semi-finals in Salt Lake City. She graduated from college in 1984 and continued to play on tour until 1986.
She now works as a nurse in the Richmond area. [2] She has one son, Bogue Cummings, born 7/10/2000 who graduated from Randolph Macon College in 5/2024 after playing collegiate soccer for them.
Billie Jean King, also known as BJK, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. King won 39 Grand Slam titles: 12 in singles, 16 in women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. King was a member of the victorious United States team in seven Federation Cups and nine Wightman Cups. For three years, she was the U.S. captain in the Federation Cup.
Hana Mandlíková is a former professional tennis player from Czechoslovakia who later obtained Australian citizenship. During her career, she won four Grand Slam singles titles - the 1980 Australian Open, 1981 French Open, 1985 US Open and 1987 Australian Open. She was also runner-up in four Grand Slam singles events - twice at Wimbledon and twice at the US Open. She won one Grand Slam women's doubles title at the 1989 US Open with Martina Navratilova. Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, Mandlíková was one of the brightest stars of her generation and is considered one of the greatest female players of the Open Era.
Zina Lynna Garrison is an American former professional tennis player. Garrison was the runner-up in singles at the 1990 Wimbledon Championships, a three-time major mixed doubles champion, and an Olympic gold and bronze medalist from the women's doubles and singles events, respectively, at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. She reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 4, on 20 November 1989.
Carling Kathrin Bassett-Seguso is a former Canadian professional tennis player, fashion model and actress. Bassett is the daughter of John F. Bassett and Susan Carling, and the granddaughter of media baron John W. H. Bassett and politician and brewery executive John Carling. She was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003.
Joanna Mary Durie is a former world No. 5 tennis player from the United Kingdom. During her career, she also reached No. 9 in doubles, and won two Grand Slam titles, both in the mixed doubles with Jeremy Bates.
Kerry Melville Reid is a former professional tennis player from Australia. During her 17-year career, Reid won one Grand Slam singles title and 26 other singles titles and was the runner-up in 40 singles tournaments. Reid was included in the year-end world top-ten rankings for 12 consecutive years (1968–1979). She won at least one tournament annually from 1966 through 1979, except for 1975. Her career-high ranking was world No. 5 in 1971, behind Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Evonne Goolagong, and Rosie Casals.
Betty Flippina Stöve is a Dutch former professional tennis player. She is best remembered for reaching the ladies' singles final, the ladies' doubles final and the mixed doubles final during the same year at Wimbledon in 1977. She also won ten Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and mixed doubles.
Julie Heldman is an American tennis player who won 22 singles titles. Beth Herr is an American tennis player from Centerville, Ohio, who won four Junior Grand Slam titles, the NCAA singles and team titles and one professional tennis tournament. In her home state of Ohio, she was a two-time high school singles state champion (1980-1981). Her NCAA singles title came in 1983.
