Kalyan is a city in the Thane District of Maharashtra state in Konkan division and a part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It is a neighbour city of Mumbai and is governed by Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation.

The headquarters of the district is the city of Thane. Bhandup is a suburban community within the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, in the state of Maharashtra, India and is also the name of a Bhandup railway station on the Mumbai suburban railway on the Central Railway line. On 4 April 2013, a building collapsed on tribal land in Mumbra, a suburb of Thane in Maharashtra, India. It has been called the worst building collapse in the area. Seventy-four people were killed, while more than 100 survived. The search for additional survivors ended on 6 April 2013.
The Thane Metro is a mass transit project for the city of Thane, Maharashtra, India. It will feature 22 stations along a 29 kilometres (18 mi) route and will be connected to lines 4 and 5 of the Mumbai Metro. The project will be implemented by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation .It received Cabinet approval on 6 March 2019 by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
