Kazbegi National Park is in Kazbegi Municipality in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of north-eastern Georgia. [1] [2]

Kazbegi National Park is a popular tourist destination despite the lack of basic tourism infrastructure. [3]

Historical monuments worth a visit are the fourteenth-century Sameba temple, the tenth-century Garbanikerk, the Sioni basilica, the Akhaltsikhe basilica and the seventeenth-century Sno Castle. [4] In the area one finds a mix of Christian and pagan customs.

Kazbegi family

The Kazbegi, originally known as Chopikashvili (ჩოფიკაშვილი), was an influential clan from the northeastern highland Georgian district of Khevi. Of a semi-legendary noble descent, the Chopikashvili rose in prominence under the Georgian king Erekle II at the end of the 18th century, when the clan's leader Kazi-Beg was made an official (mouravi) in the village Stepantsminda and placed in charge of collecting tolls on travelers through the key road to the North Caucasus.

Kazbegi Marathon

Kazbegi Marathon is an annual trail marathon held in Georgia in September. The marathon is certified by International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and courses through the Caucasus Mountains in the northern part of the country, the starting and finishing points are in the town of Kazbegi located on the historical military road on the foot of Kazbegi Mountain. The Kazbegi Marathon is both the largest as well as the first racing event held in the Caucasus. Over the years since 2010 Kazbegi Marathon offered different routes. The 2021 edition of Kazbegi Marathon will feature a fun run, SkyRace distance, 15km and an Extreme distance, 25km which requires pre-qualification of each runner. The marathon is organized by TrailLab. The marathon is marketed to an international audience, previous races attracted participants from Germany, England, Japan, Germany, Kazakhstan, Israel. Many local runners and runners from the immediate neighboring Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Russia participate as well.

Lagodekhi Protected Areas

Lagodekhi Protected Areas, also known as Lagodekhi National Park, is a pair of protected areas in the Kakheti district of Georgia: Lagodekhi Strict Nature Reserve and Lagodekhi Managed Nature Reserve. The combined area of the two is 24,451 hectares (94.41 sq mi). The reserves are located in north-eastern Georgia on the southern slopes of the Caucasus and border on Azerbaijan and Dagestan. Lagodekhi preserves a variety of rare local flora and fauna and was originally protected in 1912, under the Russian Empire, the first nature preserve in Georgia. Their ecoregion is that of the Caucasus mixed forests.

Abano Mineral Lake Natural Monument Carbon dioxide effervescent lake in Kazbegi Municipality, Georgia

Abano Mineral Lake Natural Monument is a small lake in Kazbegi Municipality in Truso valley on the left bank of Terek River, to the east of the village Abano at 2,127 m above sea level. The lake was created by a carbon dioxide filled underground stream flowing to the surface through carbonate rocks from the late Jurassic period. The lake "boils" loudly with carbon dioxide bubbles bursting. The outflow of the stream is 2.5 million liters per 24 hours. The total surface area of the lake is 0.04 ha. The emission of gas in calm weather causes carbon dioxide to accumulate in lower levels. Small animals suffocate when they get near the lake, which is why there are dead animals there, such as mice, lizards, frogs and some birds.

Keterisi Mineral Vaucluse

Keterisi Mineral Vaucluse Natural Monument is a cluster of powerful mineral water artesian aquifers pouring out at the foot of the Greater Caucasus, known as Narzan vaucluse. These mineral springs provide 25-30 million liters of hydrocarbonate-calcium water, which corresponds to 300-350 liters per second. From these sources originates stream, which creates water cascades in the village of Keterisi.

Sakhizari Cliff Natural Monument is a complex geologic structure that was formed due to abundant rainfall causing erosion of the volcanic mountain Khabarjina. Local population call this place "the ruins of the rocks" and in the past centuries at wartime villagers would seek refuge by climbing the cliffs when the enemy approached.

Nedzvi Managed Reserve Protected nature area in Georgia (country)

Nedzvi Managed Reserve is a protected area in central Georgia, in Samtskhe-Javakheti situated in the Lesser Caucasus, southwest to the nation's capital of Tbilisi in Borjomi Municipality. Nedzvi Managed Reserve along with Borjomi Strict Nature Reserve, Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and Goderdzi Petrified Forest Natural Monument is one of four protected areas under same management authority. The accurate size and borders of the protected areas has yet to be determined. Its ecoregion is that of the Caucasus mixed forests.

Liakhvi Strict Nature Reserve Protected nature area in Georgia (country)

Liakhvi Strict Nature Reserve is a protected area in the historic region Shida Kartli on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus range in the northeastern part of Tskhinvali District and in Akhalgori Municipality of Georgia. Reserve main goal is protecting flora and fauna in surrounding mountainous region. In general Patara Liakhvi gorge has many tourist attractions : ethnological, bird-watching and botanical.

Kvabiskhevi church

The Kvabiskhevi church of the Dormition, also known as Mariamtsminda is a medieval Georgian Orthodox church, situated 2 km northwest of the village of Kvabiskhevi, Borjomi Municipality, in Georgia's south-central region of Samtskhe-Javakheti. A three-nave basilica, the church was constructed in the 8th or 9th century on a high rocky mountain slope, overlooking the steep descent into the deep river canyon. The church is known for its 12th–13th-century fresco portrait of the young nobleman named Shota, who is popularly believed to be the contemporaneous epic poet Shota Rustaveli. The Kvabiskhevi church is inscribed on the list of the Immovable Cultural Monuments of National Significance of Georgia.

Cheremi historic site

The Cheremi historic site is a historic and archaeological site in eastern Georgia, situated in and around the modern village of Cheremi, Gurjaani Municipality, in the region of Kakheti. The site encompasses the ruins of churches, a castle with a circuit wall, and burials. Parts of these ruins correspond to the extinct town of Cheremi known from the early medieval Georgian chronicles and are inscribed on the list of the Immovable Cultural Monuments of National Significance.
