Kazimierz Braun (born June 29,1936) is a Polish director,writer,and scholar. [1]
Braun was born in Mokrsko Dolne. He earned a master's degree in Polish literature from PoznańUniversity in 1958 and a master's in directing from the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw in 1962. He earned a Ph.D. in letters from PoznańUniversity in 1971,a habilitation in theatre from Wrocław University,and a habilitation in directing from the Warsaw School of Drama in 1988.
Braun became a tenured professor at the University at Buffalo in 1989. He made his debut as a professional theatre director in 1961,and as a professional television director in 1962. He has directed works at the Polish Theatre in Warsaw,Teatr Wybrzeże in Gdańsk,the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków,and Teatr Solskiego in Tarnów,as well as in Canada,Germany,Ireland,and the United States. He was the artistic director of Teatr Osterwy in Lublin from 1967 to 1971,and general and artistic director there from 1971 to 1974. He was general and artistic director of the Contemporary Theatre in Wrocław from 1975 to 1984,but was fired by the Communist authorities because of his oppositional activities.
Since 1985,Braun has lived and worked in the United States. He has directed at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis,the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles,the Chicago Actors Ensemble,and Kavinoky Theatre in Buffalo. His best-known directorial works include plays by Cyprian Norwid (13 shows), [2] Tadeusz Różewicz (19 shows), [3] William Shakespeare (12 shows in Polish and English), [4] and Adam Mickiewicz (two shows). He has taught at the University of Wrocław,New York University,Swarthmore College,the University of California,Santa Cruz,and the University at Buffalo.
Braun has translated works from English,French,and Italian into Polish,and from Polish,French,and Russian into English.
Braun's father,Juliusz Braun,was a lawyer,professor of ecology,Catholic activist,and political prisoner under Joseph Stalin. His mother was Elżbieta Korwin-Szymanowska. They both died in 1990.
Braun is married to Zofia Reklewska-Braun,a writer and theatre historian. They have three children (Dr. Monika Braun,a writer and academic;Grzegorz Braun,a filmmaker and writer ;and Dr. Justyna Braun,an academic) and five granddaughters (Anna,Joanna,Aniela,Zofia,and Elżbieta).

In common with other European countries,the most frequent and most popular form of theatre in Poland is dramatic theatre,based on the existence of stable artistic companies. It is above all a theatre of directors,who decide on the form of its productions and the appearance of individual scenes. There is no strict division in Poland between theatre and film directors and actors,therefore many stage artists are known to theatre goers from films of Andrzej Wajda,for example:Wojciech Pszoniak,Daniel Olbrychski,Krystyna Janda,Jerzy Radziwiłowicz,and from films of Krzysztof Kieślowski,actors such as Jerzy Stuhr,Janusz Gajos and others.
Kazimierz Klaudiusz Górski was a Polish professional football manager. He was also a football player,capped once for Poland.
Jarosław Leon Iwaszkiewicz,was a Polish writer,poet,essayist,dramatist and translator. He is recognized for his literary achievements,beginning with poetry and prose written after World War I. After 1989,he was often presented as a political opportunist during his mature years lived in communist Poland,where he held high offices. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. In 1988,he was recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations for his role in sheltering Jews during World War II.
Tadeusz Różewicz was a Polish poet,playwright,writer,and translator. Różewicz was in the first generation of Polish writers born after Poland regained its independence in 1918,following the century of foreign partitions. He was born in Radomsko,near Łódź,in 1921. He first published his poetry in 1938. During World War II,he served in the Polish underground Home Army. His elder brother,Janusz,also a poet,was executed by the Gestapo in 1944 for serving in the Polish resistance movement. His younger brother,Stanisław,became a noted film director and screenwriter.
Brothers Benjamin Adamowicz,and Joseph Adamowicz,born Bolesław and Józef Adamowicz,were American businessmen of Polish descent and amateur aviators,who were known for their transatlantic flight in 1934.
Kazimierz Czesław Switala was a Polish communist politician. He was the Minister of Internal Affairs from 1968 to 1971,but was forced to resign as a result of the December 1970 massacre of 44 revolting Polish workers. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party from 1968 to 1971,and the head of the Chancellery of the Sejm of the Polish People's Republic (1972–1986).
Krystyna Zachwatowicz-Wajda is a Polish scenographer,costume designer and actress. She is a daughter of architect and restorer Jan Zachwatowicz and Maria Chodźko h. Kościesza,and wife of film director Andrzej Wajda. Member of the Polish Film Academy.
Lidia Zamkow (1918–1982) was a Polish theatre actress and director.
Kazimierz Dejmek was a Polish actor,theatre and film director,and politician. During his career he managed the New Theatre in Łódź,the National Theatre,Warsaw,and the Teatr Polski,Warsaw. From 1993 to 1996 he served as Poland's Minister of Culture. In 1984 Dejmek was awarded the Witkacy Prize - Critics' Circle Award and in 1989 the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta,one of his country's highest honours.

Osterwa began his Warsaw career at the age of 33 by staging the works of Poland's revolutionary dramatists including Juliusz Słowacki,Stanisław Wyspiański,Stefan Żeromski,Jerzy Szaniawski,Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer,and Cyprian Norwid. This team was commonly known as the actor's commune,resembling an ascetic monastery devoted to spiritual practice.
