Kehys-Kainuu is a subdivision of Kainuu and one of the sub-regions of Finland since 2009. It borders Russia to the East, specifically the Karelian Republic. To the Southwest, it borders Kajaani, to the North, it borders Koillismaa, to the West, Oulunkaari, and to the south, Pielien Karelia.
Historically, Kehys-Kainuu has been occupied by Sweden, Russia, Many different tribes, and Finland.
