Hyrynsalmi is a municipality in Finland and is part of the Kainuu region.
The municipality has a population of 1,998 (30 June 2025) [2] and covers an area of 1,521.38 square kilometres (587.41 sq mi) of which 100.32 km2 (38.73 sq mi) is water. [1] The population density is 1.41 inhabitants per square kilometre (3.7/sq mi).
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
The world championships in swamp football is held annually in Hyrynsalmi.
The municipality got its name (meaning "Hyry's Strait") from the Hyrynsalmi strait, which got its name from the Hyrynjärvi lake. The lake was named by Ostrobothnian huntsmen after the family name Hyry. [4]
