Kelly Bates (born July 27, 1975) is a Canadian former professional football guard and former head coach of the Simon Fraser Clan. He was most recently the offensive line coach for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was drafted by the Lions in fourth round of the 2001 CFL Draft. He played CIS football for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

College career

Bates was a core member of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies offensive line and helped the Huskies win the 1998 Vanier Cup.

Professional career

BC Lions

Bates was selected by the BC Lions in the 2001 CFL Draft (4th round, 32nd overall). In 2004, he missed 7 games to a knee injury and started 11 games. In 2005, Bates started all 18 games including the West Division Championship. In 2006, he again started all 18 regular season games, the western final, and the 94th Grey Cup. Bates was blamed by team-mates for breaking the Grey Cup after BC won it in 2006. He has been a starter on the team since 2003. [1]

Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Bates was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on May 14, 2009. [2]

Coaching career

Bates was the running backs coach and Canadian College Draft coordinator for the BC Lions from 2012 to 2014. In 2015, he became the head coach of the Simon Fraser Clan. [3] Bates was fired on November 30, 2017 after going winless through three seasons. [4]

On August 31, 2019, it was announced that Bates had been hired by the BC Lions to serve as the offensive line coach, replacing the fired Bryan Chiu. [5] He served in that capacity through to the 2024 season, but was not retained on the staff in 2025. [6]

Bryan Chiu is the former offensive line coach for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and current head coach of Vancouver College. He was a professional Canadian football centre for the Montreal Alouettes from 1997 to 2009. He has also served as the offensive line coach for the Toronto Argonauts and Ottawa Redblacks. Bryan was inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

The 2007 CFL season was the 54th season of modern-day Canadian football, the 50th season of the Canadian Football League, and many special events were held to commemorate the event. Regular-season play began on June 28 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario and concluded on November 3. The playoffs began on November 11 and ended with the championship game, the 95th Grey Cup, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, on November 25, 2007, with the Saskatchewan Roughriders as champions.

Jarious K. Jackson is an American professional football coach and former player who is the offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He has also been a coach for the Toronto Argonauts, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and BC Lions and served as the interim head coach for the Elks in 2024. Jackson played professionally as a quarterback in the CFL for eight seasons with the Lions and one year with the Argonauts where he won three Grey Cup championships in 2006, 2011, and 2012. He has also been a member of the Denver Broncos (NFL), to whom he was drafted 214th overall in the 2000 NFL draft, and the Barcelona Dragons. Jackson played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Dean Valli is a Canadian former professional football offensive lineman who played for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL). Valli attended Simon Fraser University and played for their football team, the Simon Fraser Clan. He played four full seasons with the Clan from 2002 to 2005. Dean graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University in 2006. In 2005, Valli was named to the Canada West Universities Athletic Association all-star team. He also represented SFU at the 2005 East West Bowl held in Waterloo, Ontario. Valli was selected in the 1st round, 6th overall, by the Lions in the 2006 CFL draft. 2006 was his first year playing professional football.

Richard Danny Klassen was a defensive lineman who played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the BC Lions from 1981 to 1987 and again in 1989 and 1990, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1988.

The SFU Red Leafs football or Simon Fraser Red Leafs football team represented Simon Fraser University since the athletic department's inception in 1965 until 2022. The team played by American rules while they competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1965 to 2001 against other American teams. Along with other SFU teams, the football program transferred to Canadian Interuniversity Sport and thereby switched to playing Canadian football against Canadian University teams in 2002. While playing in the CIS, SFU won its first and only Hardy Trophy conference championship in 2003 while qualifying for the playoffs twice. After playing eight seasons in the Canada West Conference of the CIS, the football team began competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II in 2010, and started played the American format of football again. Burtland "Burt" Cummings is a Canadian former professional football defensive back who played four seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Rough Riders and BC Lions. He was selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the fourth round of the 1988 CFL draft after playing college football at the University of North Dakota.
