Randy Melvin (born April 3, 1959) is an American gridiron football coach who is the defensive line coach for the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Melvin attended Aurora West High School in Aurora, Illinois and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1994.
Melvin attended Eastern Illinois University, where he played football as a defensive lineman from 1978 to 1981. He earned his Master's degree from the school in 1993 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1995.
Melvin began his coaching career at Urbana High School an assistant coach in 1982. He then returned to his alma mater Aurora West High School as an assistant coach from 1983 to 1984 before being named their head coach for 1985, a position he held through 1987.
Melvin returned to the high school level for the 2017 season as an assistant coach for Clearwater High School.
In 1988, Melvin entered the college coaching ranks at his alma mater Eastern Illinois University as their defensive line coach. After seven seasons with Eastern Illinois, he left for the University of Wyoming to be their defensive tackles coach for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. From 1997 through 1999, Melvin served as Purdue University's defensive ends coach. He returned to college coaching in 2002 as the defensive line coach at Rutgers University. After three seasons with the team, he returned to the professional ranks.
For their 1995 training camp, Melvin worked with the Denver Broncos as part of the NFL's minority coaching fellowship program. He participated in this program for the next two years as well with the New York Jets, the second of which, 1997, was spent while Bill Belichick was the Jets' assistant head coach. When Belichick left the Jets in 2000 to serve as the New England Patriots' head coach, Melvin was hired as Belichick's defensive line coach. In his second and final season with the team in 2001, Melvin earned his first Super Bowl ring by winning Super Bowl XXXVI.
After Melvin's former defensive coordinator with the Patriots Romeo Crennel was hired as the Browns' head coach in 2005, Melvin rejoined the NFL coaching ranks as the Browns' defensive line coach for 4 seasons.
After the Browns' 4-12 2008 season both General Manager Phil Savage and head coach Romeo Crennel were fired. Melvin returned to the college ranks to coach the Temple Owls' defensive line for the 2009 season. After a successful season at Temple which saw the Owls reach a bowl for the first time since 1979, Melvin rejoined Greg Schiano at Rutgers University for the 2010 season as defensive line coach.
Melvin was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive line coach from 2012 to 2013.
On June 1, 2011, it was announced that Melvin had accepted the position of defensive line coach with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League. The BC Lions won the Grey Cup and Melvin earned another championship. [1]
Melvin was the defensive line coach at Florida International University for the 2014 season. He rejoined Al Golden as the defensive line coach at the University of Miami for the 2015 season. On December 31, 2015, Melvin returned to Purdue University as the defensive line coach for Darrell Hazell. [2]
Melvin returned to the BC Lions for the 2018 season as the defensive line coach where he coached for one season.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats hired Melvin as the defensive line coach for the 2019 season. The team won the Eastern Division Final but lost in the 107th Grey Cup again the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He coached with the Tiger-Cats for four seasons, but was not retained in 2024. [3]
On January 2, 2025, Melvin returned to the BC Lions as the defensive line coach. [4]

During his tenure with the Patriots, Belichick was a central figure as the head coach and de facto general manager during the franchise's dynasty from 2001 to 2019.
Romeo Crennel is a former American football coach. A former long-time coaching assistant to Bill Parcells, Crennel served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2005 to 2008 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012, as well an assistant coach for six NFL teams and four collegiate teams. He has over 50 years of coaching experience, which has included consistently being employed as a coach for all but two seasons since 1970, only taking the 2009 and 2013 seasons off following both of his tenures as a permanent head coach. He has five Super Bowl wins as assistant coach, two with the New York Giants and three with the New England Patriots.
Scott Pioli is an American football executive who most recently worked as the assistant general manager for the Atlanta Falcons. He was an NFL analyst for NBC Sports' Football Night in America, NBC Sports Network's Pro Football Talk, Sirius XM NFL Radio and the NFL Network. He previously served as a front office executive for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs. Pioli served as the director – and later vice president – of player personnel for the Patriots from 2001 to 2008 when the franchise won three Super Bowl championships.

Cal Murphy was a Canadian football coach, general manager and scout, most notably for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. In his career as a coach and/or general manager, he led various teams to nine Grey Cup championships, earning a spot in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. In his retirement years he spent some time as a scout for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League.

A coaching tree is similar to a family tree except it shows the relationships of coaches instead of family members. There are several ways to define a relationship between two coaches. The most common way to make the distinction is if a coach worked as an assistant on a particular head coach's staff for at least a season then that coach can be counted as being a branch on the head coach's coaching tree. Coaching trees can also show philosophical influence from one head coach to an assistant.
The 2005 season was the New England Patriots' 36th in the National Football League (NFL), their 46th overall and their sixth under head coach Bill Belichick. Matthew Edward Patricia is an American football coach in the National Football League (NFL). He served 15 non-consecutive seasons as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots, including six seasons as the defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2017. During Patricia's tenure as defensive coordinator, the Patriots won two Super Bowls and allowed the fewest points in 2016. Patricia also served as the Patriots' offensive playcaller in 2022. Outside of New England, Patricia was the head coach of the Detroit Lions from 2018 to 2020. He last served as a senior defensive assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, holding defensive playcalling duties near the end of the season.
Brian Michael Daboll is a Canadian-American professional football coach who is the head coach of the New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Buffalo Bills. Daboll has also served in various capacities as an assistant coach for the New England Patriots from 2000 to 2006 and again from 2013 to 2016.
Jeff Reinebold is an American gridiron football coach who is currently serving as the defensive tackles coach for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football team. Reinebold has also coached for the Las Vegas Posse, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, BC Lions, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Montreal Alouettes. In addition to the CFL, he has coached in the NCAA, NFL Europe and The Spring League. He has also served in an executive for University of Hawaii—Mānoa. Reinebold has appeared as football analyst on Sky Sports NFL telecasts in the United Kingdom.
Cory Undlin is an American football coach who is the defensive passing game coordinator for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2020 and also served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers
Richard Stubler was an American football coach, primarily in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was most recently an assistant coach for the Toronto Argonauts. He is a five-time Grey Cup champion, all as a defensive coordinator, and was formerly the head coach of the Argonauts. He has been coaching since the 1970s and has coached at the high school level, NCAA, Arena Football League and the CFL.
Eric Anthony Mangini is a former American football coach and current television sports analyst. Mangini is a former head coach, having served as the coach of the New York Jets from 2006 until 2008 and the Cleveland Browns in 2009 until 2010. After departing Cleveland, Mangini became an NFL analyst for ESPN. He returned to coaching with the San Francisco 49ers, starting in 2013 as the team's tight ends coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2015, only to be fired in 2016 by new head coach Chip Kelly. Mangini then became an analyst for Fox Sports 1.

Billy Charles Dicken is a former arena football quarterback who is currently the defensive quality coach for the NC State Football team. Dicken played in the Arena Football League (AFL) from 2001 to 2006 for the Chicago Rush, Detroit Fury, New Orleans VooDoo and the Columbus Destroyers. He played college football at Purdue University from 1994 to 1997.
John Scott Jr. is an American football coach and former player. He was most recently the defensive line coach for the Detroit Lions in 2023. Scott played professionally for the Greensboro Prowlers of the AF2 and the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL before entering the collegiate coaching ranks.

Zimmer was the son of former Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.
Ryan Walters is an American college football coach and former safety. He played college football for Colorado from 2004 to 2008. He then served as the defensive coordinator for the Missouri Tigers (2018–2020) and on the Illinois Fighting Illini (2021–2022). He was also the head football coach of the Purdue Boilermakers (2023–2024).
