Kelly Park is a park located Compton, California. The park is located at the corner of Caldwell St and S Harris Ave. [1] [2]

History

During the 1980s and 1990s, the park was notorious for being a base for the local Kelly Park Compton Crips (formerly the Kelly Park Hustler Crips), [3] a subset of the notorious Crips gang. [4] The gang was originally known as the Kelly Park Hustlers before being affiliated with the Crips. A 1988 Los Angeles Times article stated that the park was ‘recaptured’ from local gangs. [5] [6]

Notable former members of the Kelly Park Crips gang include Eazy E, MC Ren, Sin Loc and Tweedy Bird Loc. [7]

Raymond Washington

Raymond Lee Washington was an American gangster, known as the founder of the Crips gang in Los Angeles. Washington formed the Crips as a minor street gang in the late 1960s in Los Angeles' South Central area, becoming a prominent local crime boss. In 1971, Washington formed an alliance with Stanley "Tookie" Williams, establishing the Crips as the first major African-American street gang in Los Angeles, and served as one of the co-leaders. In 1974, Washington was convicted of robbery and received a five-year prison sentence, during which his leadership and influence in the Crips declined.

Orlando Tive "Baby Lane" Anderson was the prime suspect in the murder of Tupac Shakur. Anderson belonged to the California-based gang known as the Southside Compton Crips. Detective Tim Brennan of the Compton Police Department filed an affidavit naming Anderson as a suspect.

Richard Johnson, better known by his stage name Tweedy Bird Loc, was an American rapper from Compton, California. Johnson and producer Ronnie M. Phillips organized the hip hop project Bloods & Crips, a collaboration between members of the California-based Bloods and Crips street gangs. Johnson was a Crip himself, affiliated with the Kelly Park Compton set.

The Crips are a gang based in the coastal regions of southern California. It was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1969, mainly by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams. Once a single alliance between two autonomous gangs, it is now a loosely connected network of individual "sets", often engaged in open warfare with one another. Its members traditionally wear blue clothing, a practice that has waned somewhat due to police crackdowns targeting gang members. Historically, members have been primarily of African American heritage.

Piru sets make up most of the original Blood Alliance in Los Angeles. Pirus use the colors red or burgundy to signify affiliation.

Timothy M. Brennan and Robert Ladd

Timothy M. Brennan and Robert Ladd joined the Compton Police Department as officers in 1982 and 1983, respectively. In 1988, they were promoted to become Compton's two-man gang unit. The police department could only afford to have two people at the time, even though many smaller cities typically had up to four times as many. As the gang unit, Brennan and Ladd were responsible for dealing with and investigating over fifty-five gangs in the 10.1 square mile area that make up the City of Compton. They have served as the primary or assisting investigating officers on hundreds of gang-related murders and thousands of gang-related shootings, and witnessed instances of gang-related rapes, robberies, drive-by shootings, and shootings at police officers.

Duane Keith "Keefe D" Davis is an American member of the California-based gang known as The Southside Compton Crips who made millions of dollars as a drug dealer. Davis, a childhood friend of rapper Eazy-E, is alleged to have been to linked to the murders of Tupac Shakur and Christopher "The Notorious B.I.G." Wallace. Detective Tim Brennan from Compton, California filed an affidavit naming Davis and his nephew Orlando Anderson as suspects, although fans and others have speculated as to regards to their involvement in the killing. He has never been charged with the murder.
