As of the 2020 census,Norfolk had a population of 238,005,making it the third-most populous city in Virginia after neighboring Virginia Beach and Chesapeake,and the 96th-most populous city in the nation. Norfolk holds a strategic position as the historical,urban,financial,and cultural center of the Hampton Roads region,which has more than 1.8 million inhabitants and is the 37th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S.,with ten cities.

Paul David Fraim is an American politician and lawyer. A Democrat,he was elected to the City Council of Norfolk,Virginia in 1986,was appointed mayor of Norfolk July 1,1994 and re-appointed every two years until May 2006 when he became the first popularly elected mayor since 1916. He was twice re-elected mayor and did not seek re-election in 2016. He is the longest serving mayor in the history of Norfolk.

Republican Bill Bolling was reelected as lieutenant governor,and Republican Ken Cuccinelli was elected as attorney general. The winners were inaugurated on January 16,2010,and served until January 11,2014.

Jerrauld C. C. "Jay" Jones is an American politician and attorney serving as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from the 89th district. In July 2020,Jones announced his candidacy for attorney general of Virginia in the 2021 election. Jones lost the Democratic primary to incumbent Mark Herring,despite receiving an endorsement from Governor Ralph Northam. In December 2021,Jones announced his resignation to focus on family.
The Norfolk mayoral election of 2016 took place on May 3,2016. Voters elected the Mayor of Norfolk. It saw the election of Kenny Alexander.
