Kenneth Burgos is an American politician from the state of New York. A Democrat,Burgos represented the 85th district of the New York State Assembly,based in the southeastern Bronx,starting in November 2020. [1] [2] On July 19,2024,Assemblymember Burgos resigned from the Assembly for personal reasons. [3] [4]
Burgos and his three sisters were raised in the Bronx by a single mother. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and graduated from University at Albany,SUNY with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. [1] Burgos then began working for New York City Council Member Ruben Diaz,Sr.,as a deputy chief of staff and budget director. [5] Burgos is a member of Iota Phi Theta fraternity.
In February 2020,Marcos Crespo –Assemblyman for the 85th district and chair of the Bronx County Democratic Party –announced his resignation. [6] Burgos announced he would run for the seat and,with the backing of the Bronx County Democratic Committee,defeated William Moore 62-38% in the Democratic primary. [7] [8] Burgos easily won the general election in the strongly Democratic seat,and was seated on November 12,2020. [9]
In July 2024,Burgos resigned from the New York State Assembly and later became the Chief Executive Officer of Housing New York,an organization that represents a coalition of property owners and managers who provide affordable multi-family housing in the state of New York. [10] [11]

Kathy Hochul ascended to the governorship in August 2021,upon Andrew Cuomo's resignation following allegations of sexual harassment. She sought a full term as governor. She appointed Brian Benjamin to the position of lieutenant governor and planned to run alongside him until he too resigned in April 2022. Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor,while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.

The 2021 New York City Council elections were held on November 2,2021. The primary elections were held on June 22,2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021;these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019 and the second to use ranked-choice voting since New York City repealed PR-STV in 1945. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census,candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time,stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023.

Hochul,though the lines passed by the Independent Redistricting Commission and the state legislature on April 28,2023,were nearly identical to the 2022 districts. Democrats have held a majority in the New York State Assembly since 1975.
