Elections to the New York State Assembly were held on November 3, 2020 in the U.S. state of New York. The elections were part of the biennial elections in the United States, with elections for the State Senate, the U.S. House, and U.S. president being held on the same day. [7] Primary elections were held on June 23. [8]

Contents

Assembly Democrats won 105 of the chamber's 150 seats on election day, while Republicans won 43 seats and two other seats were won by members of third parties. [1] [9]

Summary

Longtime Asm. Carmen Arroyo (D-Bronx) was disqualified from the Democratic primary ballot due to election fraud. [11]

Incumbent Asms. Michael DenDekker, Joseph Lentol, Michael Miller, Walter Mosley, Felix Ortiz, and Aravalla Simotas were defeated in Democratic primaries. [8]

Incumbents Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) and Mark Johns (R-Webster) were defeated in the general election. [12] [13]

Assemblymember Rebecca Seawright was disqualified from seeking re-election as a Democrat due to paperwork errors, but instead campaigned as the candidate of the Rise and Unite Party and was re-elected. [5]

Assemblymember Fred Thiele, a member of the Independence Party who caucuses with the Democrats, was re-elected in Assembly District One. [4]

The Independence Party was a political party in the U.S. state of New York. The party was founded in 1991 by Gordon Black, Tom Golisano, and Laureen Oliver and acquired ballot status in 1994. They lost their ballot status in 2020 under a change in the New York state election law that required at least 130,000 votes on the party line every two years. Although often associated with Ross Perot, as the party came to prominence in the wake of Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, it was created prior to Perot's run. In 2020, it affiliated with the Alliance Party, but disaffiliated in 2021. It used to have one elected member of the New York State Assembly, Fred Thiele, until Thiele switched his party affiliation to the Democratic Party in 2022. He joined the Democratic Party after the Independence Party lost its ballot position.

Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor, while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
