David G. McDonough is a member of the New York State Assembly,representing the 14th district,which includes portions of the town of Hempstead in Nassau County on Long Island. A Republican,McDonough was first elected through a special election in 2002.
McDonough formerly served in the United States Coast Guard and the United States Air Force and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Columbia University. He also graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Prior to elected office,he served as the past president of the Nassau County Council of Chambers of Commerce. Prior to that,from 1994 to 1998,McDonough served four terms as president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. [1]
In 2001,Assemblywoman Kate Murray was elected as clerk of the town of Hempstead,vacating the Assembly seat. As a result,a special election was called,and McDonough was nominated by Republicans as their candidate. In a competitive election,he defeated Democrat Steve November 52% to 48%. [2] Since then,he has never faced serious opposition for reelection. [3]
In the Assembly,McDonough is the chairman of a Task Force on Public Safety, [4] and is the ranking member on the Assembly Transportation Committee. [5] He and his wife,Carolyn,reside in Merrick,New York and have three children and four grandchildren.
Nassau County is a suburban county located on Long Island,immediately to the east of New York City. As of the 2020 United States census,Nassau County's population was 1,395,774,making it the sixth-most populous county in the State of New York,and reflecting an increase of 56,242 (+4.2%) from the 1,339,532 residents enumerated at the 2010 census. Its county seat is Mineola,while the county's largest town is Hempstead. Along with the remainder of Long Island,Nassau County lies in the southeastern portion of New York State.
The 1946 United States Senate elections were held November 5,1946,in the middle of Democratic President Harry S. Truman's first term after Roosevelt's passing. The 32 seats of Class 1 were contested in regular elections,and four special elections were held to fill vacancies. The Republicans took control of the Senate by picking up twelve seats,mostly from the Democrats. This was the first time since 1932 that the Republicans had held the Senate,recovering from a low of 16 seats following the 1936 Senate elections.
The 1930 United States Senate elections occurred in the middle of Republican President Herbert Hoover's term. The 32 seats of Class 2 were contested in regular elections,and special elections were held to fill vacancies. With the Great Depression beginning to take hold,Republican incumbents became unpopular,and Democrats picked up a net of eight seats,erasing the Republican gains from the previous election cycle,however,Republicans retained control of the chamber. This was the first of four consecutive Senate elections during the Depression in which Democrats made enormous gains,achieving a cumulative pick-up of 34 seats.
The 2006 New York gubernatorial election took place on November 7,2006,to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of New York,concurrently with elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections,then incumbent Republican governor George Pataki chose not to run for re-election in a fourth term. Democrat Eliot Spitzer,the New York Attorney General,won the election over former Republican state Assembly minority leader John Faso. As of 2023,this is the last time the Governor’s office in New York changed partisan control. This was the first open-seat election since 1982. Primary elections were held on September 12. This is the last gubernatorial election where any of the following counties voted Democratic:Genesee,Chautauqua,Cattaraugus,Niagara,Fulton,Steuben,Tioga &Schoharie.
The 1894 United States House of Representatives elections were held from June 4,1894,to November 6,1894,with special elections throughout the year. Elections were held to elect representatives from all 356 congressional districts across each of the 44 U.S. states at the time,as well as non-voting delegates from the inhabited U.S. territories. The winners of this election served in the 54th Congress,with seats apportioned among the states based on the 1890 United States census.
Francis Thomas Purcell was an American Republican politician who was county executive of Nassau County,New York (1978–87). He served as a trustee and also as mayor of the village of Malverne,was a member of the New York State Assembly,and supervisor of the town of Hempstead,New York,before becoming county executive in 1978. After resigning in 1987,Purcell became a political commentator for Cablevision's news channel News 12 Long Island. In 2004,a section of land formerly called Hempstead Plains was dedicated to Purcell in honor of his service and dedication to Nassau County.
Frederick W. Thiele Jr. is an American politician who serves in the New York State Assembly from the 1st district since 2013 and the 2nd district from 1995 to 2012,as a member of multiple political parties. Thiele was originally elected as a member of the Republican Party,but switched to the Independence Party of New York in 2009. He joined the Democratic Party after the Independence Party lost its ballot position.
