Marianne Buttenschon is an American politician and educator from the state of New York. She is a member of the New York State Assembly,representing the 119th district.
Buttenschon was born and raised in Oneida County,and grew up in Whitesboro,New York. Her father,Bill Goodman,was town supervisor of Whitestown,New York and a member of the Oneida County legislature. [1]
Buttenschon earned her Associate degree from Mohawk Valley Community College,followed by a B.A. in Public Justice from SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Buttenschon then earned a master's degree in Public Policy from Binghamton University and a Doctor of Education from Northeastern University. [2]
Before entering politics,Buttenschon was the dean for emergency preparedness and public service at Mohawk Valley Community College,and had previously served as dean of students. [2]
Buttenschon served as vice president of the Utica Community Food Bank and a member of the League of Women Voters. For 30 years,Buttenschon and her husband have operated the Buttenschon Christmas Tree Farm in Marcy,New York. [2]
She announced her intention to run in the 2018 election for New York State Assembly to succeed Anthony Brindisi,who was elected to Congress. [3] She defeated Republican Dennis Bova in the general election with 56% of the vote. [4] In the 2020 election she defeated Republican candidate John Zielenski with 57% of the vote. [5] She has announced her candidacy for the 2024 election. [6]

The name is in honor of the Oneida,one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois League or Haudenosaunee,which had long occupied this territory at the time of European encounter and colonization. The federally recognized Oneida Indian Nation has had a reservation in the region since the late 18th century,after the American Revolutionary War. The county is part of the Mohawk Valley region of the state.

New York State Route 49 (NY 49) is an east–west state highway in central New York in the United States. It runs for just over 64 miles (103 km) from an intersection with NY 3 in the town of Volney in Oswego County,New York to an interchange with Interstate 790 (I-790),NY 5,NY 8 and NY 12 in the city of Utica in Oneida County. The route follows a generally northwest–southeast alignment between the two points,passing along the north shore of Oneida Lake and directly serving the city of Rome. As NY 49 heads east,it connects to several highways of regional importance,such as I-81 in the village of Central Square and NY 13 in the town of Vienna. Most of NY 49 is a two-lane surface road;however,the section between Rome and Utica is a freeway known as the Utica–Rome Expressway.

Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is a non-profit health system providing services to residents of the Mohawk Valley in Central New York. It was created in 2014 as an affiliation of Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Rufus Pasquale "Rufie" Elefante was an American political boss from Utica,New York. Originally a Republican,who worked as a trucker,Elefante rose to power during the late 1920s. Though he never held public office,he came to control the Democratic political machine in Utica,which dominated Utica politics from the 1930s through the 1950s. Although the machine oversaw a period of economic stability for Utica,its tolerance of organized crime led to widespread corruption and vice,giving Utica the nickname "Sin City". Elefante was the most powerful figure in Oneida County during his time,and is still regarded as the Utica politician with the largest legacy. He remains a very controversial figure in Utica politics.

Jedediah Sanger was the founder of the town of New Hartford,New York,United States. He was a native of Sherborn,Massachusetts,and the ninth child of Richard and Deborah Sanger,a prominent colonial New England family. The major-party candidates were Democratic incumbent Anthony Brindisi and Republican Claudia Tenney,with a third-party candidate,Libertarian Keith Price,also participating. In the 2018 House race in this district,Brindisi unseated the freshman incumbent Tenney by a margin of less than 1 percent. The rematch was expected to be just as competitive.
