Edward L. Gibbs (born October 28,1968) is an American politician who is currently representing the 68th district in the New York State Assembly since 2022. [1] [2] He is the first formerly incarcerated New York Assembly member. [3]
Born the second-eldest of four,Gibbs was raised in public housing in East Harlem by a single mother. His family lived off of welfare. [4] As a teenager,Gibbs sold crack cocaine to support his family. [5]
At 17 years old,Gibbs was stabbed in the leg in an attempted robbery. In an act of self defense,Gibbs shot and killed his attacker before turning himself in at a local police station. [5] He spent 17 months on Rikers Island before accepting a plea deal. Gibbs then served time at the Elmira,Cayuga,and Mid-State Correctional Facilities. [6] In prison,he received his GED and associate degree. [4]
On October 3,2024,Gibbs was arrested and taken into custody following a confrontation with police which occurred after his brother was pulled over after having an unregistered vehicle. [7] [8] The incident,which started out as a heated conversation before escalating,would later result in a dozen police cars responding. [7] [8] Gibbs was not immediately released and still remained in custody during the afternoon. [8] Though the reason for the arrest was not immediately specified,it was not believed to be connected to the ongoing criminal investigation against New York Mayor Eric Adams,who Gibbs is an ally of. [8] [7] Later in the day,while speaking outside his precinct office,Gibbs apologized to "officer Fibbs" and "officer Peter," stating that the arrest was justified and that he had interferred with a police investigation. [9] Despite this,the exact charges he is facing remain unknown. [9]

Congressman Antonio Delgado was appointed to replace Benjamin as lieutenant governor. Hochul defeated Jumaane Williams and Tom Suozzi in the Democratic primary for governor,while Delgado defeated Ana Maria Archila and Diana Reyna in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
New York City has been the site of many Black Lives Matter protests in response to incidents of police brutality and racially motivated violence against black people. The Black Lives Matter movement began as a hashtag after the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin,and became nationally recognized for street demonstrations following the 2014 deaths of two African Americans,Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Garner was killed in the Staten Island borough of New York City,leading to protests,demonstrations,and work towards changes in policing and the law. Following the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota in 2020,the global response included extensive protests in New York City,and several subsequent changes to policy.
On March 25,2024,New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Jonathan Diller was shot while conducting a traffic stop in Far Rockaway,Queens. He was subsequently transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center,where he died due to his injuries.
