Kent County High School (KCHS) is a public school located in Worton, Maryland in Kent County. It is the only high school within Kent County, is part of the Kent County Public Schools district, and serves students from ninth through twelfth grades. Trojans are the school mascot and the school colors are blue and gold. [1] The student body is 2/3 white. [2] [3] [4]

Overview

The school is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the small rural town of Worton. The school campus is shared by Worton Elementary School, Kent County Community Center, and the Worton Regional Park. The property sits on the intersection of Maryland Route 297 and Maryland Route 298.

History

The current high school building was constructed in the late 1960's, and opened to the first group of students in the fall of 1971. The old high school building now houses Kent County Middle School. [5]

The high school was built to handle the growing student population from the former Chestertown, Rock Hall, Galena, and H. H. Garnett high schools. The high school was opened as the county's first, and one of the country's last, fully racially-integrated public schools—which was initiated following the ruling of Brown v. Board of Education. H. H. Garnett High, the school which served African Americans in Kent County, was closed and reconfigured to serve integrated elementary students residing in Chestertown. The three white high schools; Chestertown, Rock Hall, and Galena, were closed and reconfigured to serve integrated student populous of the middle school level (grades 5-8). To its students and staff, Kent County High School is a place of diverse education where CTE programs, community service organizations, and athletic and performing arts/band are offered.

It had championship football teams in 1989 [6] and 1990. [7]

Wayne Gilchrest taught at the school. [8]

In 2021, Kris Hemstetter became principal. [9] Dale Kevin Brown is a former principal at the school. [10] [11] He was succeeded by Joe Graf. [12]

Alumnus basketball player JayShaun Freeman has been a leader on the Chesapeake College basketball team. [13]

Maryland Route 213 (MD 213) is a 68.25-mile (109.84 km) state highway located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the United States. The route runs from MD 662 in Wye Mills, Queen Anne's County, north to the Pennsylvania border in Cecil County, where the road continues into that state as Pennsylvania Route 841 (PA 841). The route, which is a two-lane undivided highway most of its length, passes through mainly rural areas as well as the towns of Centreville, Chestertown, Galena, Cecilton, Chesapeake City, and Elkton. MD 213 intersects many routes including U.S. Route 50 (US 50) near Wye Mills, US 301 near Centreville, and US 40 in Elkton. It crosses over the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in Chesapeake City on the Chesapeake City Bridge. MD 213 is designated by the state as the Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway between the southern terminus and Chesapeake City with the portion north of MD 18 in Centreville a National Scenic Byway. In addition, the route is also considered part of the Atlantic to Appalachians Scenic Byway between Chesapeake City and MD 273 in Fair Hill.

Georgetown is an unincorporated community in northeastern Kent County, Maryland, United States. The community was laid out in 1736. Georgetown was named for Prince George who later became King of the United Kingdom. Georgetown is located on the south side of the Sassafras River at the Maryland Route 213 bridge, north of Galena and south of Cecilton. Directly to the north across the river is the unincorporated community of Fredericktown in Cecil County.

Maryland Route 299 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs 5.67 miles (9.12 km) from MD 313 and MD 330 at Massey in eastern Kent County north to U.S. Route 301 near Warwick in far southern Cecil County. MD 299 was constructed from Massey to Sassafras around 1930 and from there to MD 282 in Warwick in the early 1930s. The highway between US 301 and MD 282 was transferred to county control in 1958.

Maryland Route 297 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Worton Road, the highway runs 3.59 miles (5.78 km) from MD 213 near Chestertown north to MD 298 in Butlertown in central Kent County. MD 297 was constructed in the late 1920s and reconstructed in the early 1970s. The highway from Butlertown to Newtown was part of MD 297 between 1942 and 1993.

Still Pond is a census-designated place in Kent County, Maryland, United States. Still Pond is located at the intersection of Maryland routes 292 and 566 on Still Pond Neck, south-southeast of Betterton and north of Chestertown. Much of the community is included in the Still Pond Historic District and it is notable as the first place in Maryland in which women gained the right to vote.
