Kent State University (KSU) is a public research university in Kent, Ohio, United States. The university includes seven regional campuses in Northeast Ohio located in Ashtabula, Burton, East Liverpool, Jackson Township, New Philadelphia, Salem, and Warren, along with additional regional and international facilities in Cleveland, Independence, and Twinsburg, Ohio; New York City; and Florence, Italy.
Columbiana County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 101,877. The county seat is Lisbon and its largest city is Salem. Created in 1803, the county name is derived from that of 15th-century Italian explorer Christopher Columbus.
East Liverpool is a city in southeastern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,958 at the 2020 census. It lies along the Ohio River at the intersection of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia about 30 miles (48 km) from both Pittsburgh and Youngstown. The city is most notable for its pottery industry, which was at one time the largest in the US.
Salem is a city in northern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,915 at the 2020 census. It extends into southern Mahoning County and is the principal city of the Salem micropolitan area. Salem was founded by Quakers in 1806 and played a key role in the abolitionist movement as a hub of the Underground Railroad. Once an industrial town, Salem is now a commuter town and regional economic center, home to Allegheny Wesleyan College and Kent State University at Salem.
Cleveland State University (CSU) is a public research university in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1964 and opened for classes in 1965 after acquiring the entirety of Fenn College, a private school that had been in operation since 1923. CSU absorbed the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law in 1969. Today it is part of the University System of Ohio, has more than 120,000 alumni, and offers over 200 academic programs amongst eight colleges. As of the 2020 census, the region had a population of 430,591, making it the 125th-largest metro area in the country.
East Liverpool Junior/Senior High School is a public high school in East Liverpool, Ohio, United States. It is the only secondary school in the East Liverpool City School District, serving the city and surrounding Glenmoor, La Croft and Liverpool Township. Athletic teams compete as the East Liverpool Potters in the Ohio High School Athletic Association as a member of the Buckeye 8 Athletic League as well as the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.

Marion Technical College, is a public technical college in Marion, Ohio. It shares a campus with Ohio State University at Marion. Founded in 1970 with classes beginning in 1971, MTC has awarded over 7,500 associate degrees. The college offers associate degrees, certificates, and transfer programs in the areas of Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Public Service, Health, and Arts and Sciences. As of 2023, it offered one Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The college practices open admissions. Some Marion Tech professors teach courses at local high schools for qualified students to earn college credits. High school students comprise 55% of MTC's enrollment, making them the student majority and the cause of increased enrollment at the college over the past decade.
The area now occupied by the city of Kent, Ohio, was previously inhabited by various Native American tribes until the 19th century. Though little record of any settlement exists, the area was located along several known trails. One example of Native American inhabitants in the area can be found at Towner’s Woods Park where a mound is located. In 1798 it was sold to Aaron Olmsted as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. He initially named the area "Franklin" after his son, Aaron Franklin Olmsted. The first settlers, the Haymaker family, arrived in late 1805, having been attracted to the area by the Cuyahoga River and its potential for powering gristmills.
Kent State University at Salem is a satellite campus of Kent State University in the vicinity of Salem, Ohio, United States. Kent State Salem offers baccalaureate and associate degree programs and is administered with Kent State University at East Liverpool. As of 2021, enrollment at Kent State Salem was 957 with total enrollment for the Columbiana Campuses at over 1,400.
Wright State University–Lake Campus is a branch campus of Wright State University located in Jefferson Township, between Celina, and St. Marys, Ohio. The 211 acres (85 ha) campus sits on the northern shore of Grand Lake St. Marys at 7600 Lake Campus Drive. Founded in 1962 by the Western Ohio Educational Foundation, an organization created to support higher education in the Mercer and Auglaize counties of Ohio, the school was affiliated with Ohio Northern University before it became a branch campus of Wright State University in 1969. Located near Dayton, Wright State is part of the University System of Ohio.
