History

Kerry involvement in the League of Ireland began when a representative side from the Kerry District League participated in the Eircom U21 League (now the League of Ireland U19 Division) in 2002 and 2003. [3] Consequently, Tralee Dynamos A.F.C. played in the third-tier A Championship between 2009 and 2011, while an application for membership of the 2012 League of Ireland First Division was unsuccessful. [4]

The Kerry District League resumed engagement with the League of Ireland underage leagues in the latter part of the 2010s, beginning with the League of Ireland U17 Division in 2016, [5] and subsequently the League of Ireland U19 Division in 2019. [6]

In June 2022, it was announced that an application to join the 2023 League of Ireland First Division had been lodged by Kerry Football Club, an entity comprised of the Kerry District League and a consortium led by Brian Ainscough and Billy Dennehy. [7]

Kerry's participation in the League of Ireland was confirmed with the awarding of a First Division License in November 2022, ahead of the 2023 League of Ireland First Division. [2]
