Key West Street Car Company

The Key West Street Car Company was incorporated by Florida state law chapter 3658, approved February 12, 1885, to establish a street railroad for public transportation in Key West, Florida.

The law stated the company had a right "to construct and operate a line of railway or railroads on any or all the streets in the city of Key West, as per charter granted by the Board of Aldermen of said city of Key West, Florida, and the right to extend or build said road upon any and all the avenues, streets or roads leading into said city of Key West, and upon all roads on the island of Key West; and said company shall further have the right to operate said line or lines of railroad, or any of them, with steam or horse power."

It was established and owned by Walter C. Maloney, Edward H. Gato, Lewis W. Pierce, George G. Watson, John White, and Charles B. Pendleton.

The Florida Midland Railway Company was incorporated under the general incorporation laws of Florida, and surveyed a line from Lake Jessup, in Orange County, to Leesburg, in Lake County.

The Arcadia, Gulf Coast and Lakeland Railroad Company was owned by George B. Morton, Anthony Peters and Woodward Emery. It was incorporated under Florida state law chapter FOO, approved May 21, 1891, "for the purpose of constructing, maintaining and operating a railroad from a point on or near Gasparilla Island, in the county of Lee, via the town of Arcadia, in the county of DeSoto, to Plant City, in the county of Hillsborough, and to the city of Lakeland, in the county of Polk, with such extensions and branches as they may deem necessary". The railroad was promised land grants along its line. The company managed to operate a short 9-mile stretch of track between Bradenton and Sarasota.

The Palm Beach Railway and Power Company was a Florida railroad. It was incorporated under Florida state law chapter 4265, approved May 25, 1893, under the ownership of Edward Manrara, Candide A. M. Ybor and Emilio Pons, "to build, construct, purchase, own, maintain and operate a line or lines of street railway in the city of Tampa, on any street not already occupied by any other competing line of street railway; and may extend said railroad from said city of Tampa to any point on Hillsborough Bay, east of the Hillsborough River. And further, shall have the right and power to erect, construct, purchase, own and operate an electric light plant, in or out of said city of Tampa, for the purpose of furnishing said city and vicinity and the inhabitants thereof with electric lights."

The Ocala Street and Suburban Railroad Company was incorporated on July 21, 1888 under the general incorporation laws of Florida. They were granted the exclusive right to operate a street railroad in Ocala, Florida by a town ordinance passed September 18, 1889.

The South Florida Railroad was a railroad from Sanford, Florida, to Tampa, Florida, becoming part of the Plant System in 1893 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. It served as the southernmost segment of the Atlantic Coast Line's main line. The line remains in service today and is now part of the Central Florida Rail Corridor in the Orlando metro area. The rest of the line remains under the ownership of CSX Transportation as part of their A Line.

The Winter Park Company was incorporated by Florida state law chapter 3669, approved February 6, 1885. It was owned by Loring A. Chase, Olive E. Chapman and J. F. Welborne of Winter Park, Florida, and Orrison S. Marden and Frank G. Webster of Boston, Massachusetts. Among its powers were laying out roads on its property, buying and building hotels, and "the sole and exclusive right to build, equip, maintain and operate a street railway or railways in Winter Park, Orange county, Florida, and for such purpose to use any and all the streets, roads and ways now or in the future there laid out, and it may at any time sell and dispose of such railway or railways, and the equipment thereto belonging, as well as the privilege of operating the same."

The Ocala, Silver Springs and Park Street Railroad Company was incorporated by Florida state law chapter 3805 which was approved June 7, 1887. It was incorporated "to construct or operate a line of railway or railroad from the city of Ocala, in Marion county, to Silver Springs, in said county, and from Silver Springs to Silver Springs Park, in the said county, and through the streets of Silver Springs and Silver Springs Park under such restrictions as may be made by law, and said company shall have the right to operate said lines of road with steam or horse-power, as may be most convenient".

The Seminole Gulf Railway is a short line freight and passenger excursion railroad headquartered in Fort Myers, Florida, that operates two former CSX Transportation railroad lines in Southwest Florida. The company's Fort Myers Division, which was previously the southernmost segment of CSX's Fort Myers Subdivision, runs from Arcadia south to North Naples via Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, Estero, and Bonita Springs. The company's other line, the Sarasota Division, runs from Oneco south through Sarasota. Seminole Gulf acquired the lines in November 1987 and operates its own equipment. The company's first train departed Fort Myers on November 14, 1987.

The Overseas Highway is a 113-mile (181.9 km) highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys to Key West. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad</span> Historic railroad system

The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad was the final name of a system of railroads throughout Florida, becoming part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1900. The system, including some of the first railroads in Florida, stretched from Jacksonville west through Tallahassee and south to Tampa. Much of the FC&P network is still in service under the ownership of CSX Transportation.

The Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway was a railroad and steamboat network in Florida at the end of the 19th century. Most of its lines became part of the Plant System in 1899 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. The line remains in service today with a vast majority of it now being CSX Transportation's Sanford Subdivision.

The Manhattan Railway Company was an elevated railway company in Manhattan and the Bronx, New York City, United States. It operated four lines: the Second Avenue Line, Third Avenue Line, Sixth Avenue Line, and Ninth Avenue Line.

Chicago & Northwestern R. Co. v. Crane, 113 U.S. 424 (1885), was a suit brought by a taxpayer and resident in the Town of Polk City, Iowa, on behalf of himself and all other resident voters, taxpayers and property holders, commenced suit in a state court of Iowa against two companies, praying for a peremptory writ of mandamus to compel the reconstruction and operation of the old line after the Chicago and North Western Railway, an Illinois corporation. changed the line and made it avoid the city, constructing a branch to the latter. C&NW Railway was leased the line by the D&M Railroad Company, an Iowa Corporation, who had received from a township in Iowa, in consideration of its agreement to construct and maintain a railroad to a city in the township, the proceeds of a special tax and a conveyance of a large amount of swamp lands. It constructed the railroad and operating it for a time before leasing it to C&N Railway.

The Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic railroad, nicknamed Black Cinders & Ashes, ran from Claiborne, Maryland, to Ocean City, Maryland. It operated 87 miles (140.0 km) of center-line track and 15.6 miles (25.11 km) of sidings. Chartered in 1886, the railroad started construction in 1889 and cost $2.356 million ($2024=79,895,000).
