Subedar Major Kharka Bahadur Limbu, AC, MC was an Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) with the 8 Assam Rifles, who was posthumously awarded India's highest peace time military decoration Ashoka Chakra for his gallant act in Nagaland. [1]

Early life

Subedar Major Kharka Bahadur Limbu was born at Mantri village in Imphal district of Manipur in British India. His father's name was Shri Arthvir Limbu. [2]

Military career

On 5 December 1929 Limbu joined the Assam Rifles of British Indian Army. He took part in various wars and operations. Subedar Maj Limbu became a great soldier and earned the respect from his officers and soldiers under him as well.

World War II

He took part in the World War II in Burma Campaign. For his bravery and courage, he was awarded with the gallantry award, “Military Cross” by the British government.

Naga Hills Operation

He was promoted to the rank of Subedar Major in 1961 and became a dependable junior commissioned officer. In the same year, Subedar Major Limbu's unit was deployed in the Nagaland. His unit was also engaged in counter-insurgency operations. The Area of responsibility (AOR) of the unit was affected by the Naga insurgents. They would attack the forces every now and then. This resulted, the unit had to maintain a very high level of alert at all times and be prepared for action at a very short notice. 8 Assam Rifles planned one such counter-insurgency operation on 26 Apr 1961 under the leadership of Subedar Major Limbu on the basis of the information from the intelligence. The operation was planned to neutralize the threat of Naga insurgents. They were hiding in thick jungles, which falling under the AOR of the unit. [3]

In the early morning of 26 April, they reached the suspected area. SM Limbu led the operation along with his soldiers. The suspected area was located in the thick forest. It was built around a pit with bamboo barricades all around it. SM Limbu quickly cordoned off the area. He also deployed his soldiers tactically to be prepared for action. After breaking the barricades, Subedar Major Limbu leading the attack charged at the militants. Two militants were eliminated from the attack. He was taking possession of their weapons. Suddenly Subedar Major Limbu got seriously injured by a bullet from the militants. He was not caring for his injuries. After this incident, he crawled and lobbed two grenades in the insurgents bunker. He killed three of them. He inspired his soldiers till all the insurgents were eliminated. He also gave instructions to his soldiers. Subedar Major Limbu later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Thus Subedar Major Limbu laid down his life for his nation. [4]

For his extraordinary courage,devotion to duty and the supreme sacrifice for his nation, Subedar Major Kharka Bahadur Limbu was given India's highest peacetime military decoration “Ashok Chakra”. [5]

Neelakantan Jayachandran Nair

Colonel Neelakantan Jayachandran Nair, AC, KC (popularly known as "NJ") was a highly decorated officer of the Indian Army. On 20 December 1993, while heading an advance party of the battalion, his convoy was ambushed by Naga rebels. Nair personally led the attack to break the ambush and sacrificed his life defending his men. For this act of valour, he was conferred the Ashoka Chakra.

D. Sreeram Kumar

Lieutenant Colonel D. Sreeram Kumar AC is a serving Indian Army officer who was decorated in 2010 with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry decoration.

Chuni Lal

Naib Subedar Chuni Lal AC, VrC, SM was an Indian Army soldier of 8th battalion. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. He was born in Bhaderwah, and basically from Gandhari Paddar and lived in Bhara village in Doda district of Jammu. Decorated with Vir Chakra and Sena Medal (Gallantry), JC-593527, Lal was martyred on 24 June 2007 in a militant flush-out operation in Kashmir’s Kupwara sector. These militants, all of whom were also shot dead, were trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC) and enter Indian territory. The success of this militant flush-out operation, which claimed his life, earned him the highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield, the Ashok Chakra.

Mohit Sharma (soldier)

Major Mohit Sharma, AC, SM was an Indian Army Officer who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peace-time military decoration. Maj Sharma was from the elite 1st Para SF. He was killed in action on 21 March 2009 while leading his Bravo Assault Team during a counter-terrorism operation in Kupwara district.

Sudhir Kumar Walia

Major Sudhir Kumar Walia, AC, SM** was an Officer in the Indian Army serving in the elite Para. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration, in January 2000.

Rajiv Kumar Joon

Major Rajiv Kumar Joon, AC, SC was a highly decorated Officer in the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peace-time military decoration. He was previously decorated with the Shaurya Chakra, the third-highest peacetime military decoration.

Subedar Major Mahendra Singh, KC, SM is a decorated Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of 9 Para SF. He was half body paralyzed in an Operation.
