The Kharol are a Hindu caste found in the state of Rajasthan in India. [1]

History and origin

The Kharol community is historically associated with the occupation of salt making. In the local language, Rajasthani, the word khar means cotton, and a kandera means someone who works with cotton. Like many groups in Rajasthan, they claim Rajput ancestry. They are said to have migrated from Delhi to Ajmer. The community speak the Mewari dialect. [2]

Present circumstances

The community are divided into two endogamous divisions, namely the Nathwala and Todwala. These two divisions are sub-divided gotras, and they maintain gotra exogamy.The Kharol are no longer involved in their traditional occupation of manufacturing salt, and are mainly involved in agriculture, being landless labourers. The Singiwala are a Muslim community, found in the state of Rajasthan in India. They also known as Jheewar Bangalee. Many members of Singiwala community have migrated to Pakistan after independence have settled in Karachi, Sindh.

The Salvi are found in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan in India.

The Kandera is a Hindu community found in the state of Rajasthan in India. They belong to kshatriyavarna.

The Pinjara are a Muslim community found in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in India. They are also known as Shaikh Mansoori, especially in Gujarat, where the name Pinjara is no longer used. The Pinjara is the traditional cotton carder of Central India, just like the Behna are the traditional cotton carders of North India. Some members of Pinjara community have migrated to Pakistan after the independence in 1947 and have settled in Karachi, Sindh.

The Hiranbaz are a Muslim community found in the state of Rajasthan in India. They are also known as Mertia or Mertia Qasai.

The Dabgar are a Hindu caste found in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh in India. They are also known as Dhalgar and have scheduled caste status in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, while they have Other Backward Class status in Gujarat.In Rajasthan, the community prefer the self-designation is Dhalgar.

The Gametia are a sub-division of the Bhil community indigenous to & found in the current state of Rajasthan in India. They are known variously as Gamet or Gametia.
