Kiddo is the debut extended play by Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez. It was released on April 21, 2017, by FMLY and Republic Records. The EP was supported by two singles, "Figures" and "Shutter Island". The third single, "Gatekeeper", was released alongside a short film. The EP peaked at No. 83 on the Canadian Hot 100 and was nominated for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year at the 2018 Juno Awards. [3]

Release

Her first single, "Figures", was premiered by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio, alongside its music video. [4] "Figures" peaked at number 58 on the Canadian Hot 100 in 2017. It was certified double platinum by Music Canada, and Gold by the RIAA. "Shutter Island" was released as the second single of the EP. [5] In April 2017, Reyez released Kiddo. The third single "Gatekeeper" was released alongside a short film. "Gatekeeper" addressed sexism and exploitation in the music industry and was based on her experience with music producer Noel "Detail" Fisher, who was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. [6] "Great One" was released as the fourth single from the EP. [7]

Reception

Kiddo peaked at No. 83 on the Canadian Album Chart. [3] Kiddo was placed on the Long List of the 2017 Polaris Music Prize and lead to four nominations at the 2018 Juno Awards (R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, Breakthrough Artist, Video of the Year (for Gatekeeper), and Juno Fan Choice Award), [8] where she won Breakthrough Artist. She also received two 2017 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards nominations for Best New Canadian Artist and Fan Fave Video for "Shutter Island". She was also nominated for two 2018 MTV Music Video Awards, including Push Artist of the Year and Video With A Message (for "Gatekeeper"). Due to the EP, Billboard named Reyez one of the "10 Hip-Hop and R&B Artists to Watch in 2018". [9]

Alessia Caracciolo, known professionally as Alessia Cara, is a Canadian singer-songwriter. After uploading acoustic covers of songs such as "Love Yourself" and "Sweater Weather" online, she signed with EP Entertainment and Def Jam Recordings in 2014 and released her debut single the following year. "Here" peaked at number 19 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart and was a sleeper hit in the US, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It was released as a single by FMLY on August 26, 2016 and was later added to her debut studio album Before Love Came to Kill Us (2020). The song was written by Reyez and Shy Carter alongside Björn Djupström and Tobias Frelin, the members of songwriting duo Priest and the Beast, who also produced it.

"Good Guy" is a song by American rapper Eminem from his tenth studio album Kamikaze, released on August 31, 2018 via Shady Records. Recording sessions took place at Effigy Studios in Detroit. Produced by Illadaproducer with additional production by Em, it features guest vocals by Canadian singer Jessie Reyez and a looped vocal sample through the song from "Glassy Sky" by AmaLee. Despite never being released as a single, the song has managed to chart in several countries. On December 7, 2018, the accompanying music video was released.

Before Love Came to Kill Us is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez. It was released on March 27, 2020, by FMLY and Island Records. The record was prefaced with the singles "Figures", "Imported" with 6lack, and "Love in the Dark", and the promotional single "Ankles". A deluxe edition with three additional songs was made available digitally on April 9, 2020. A super deluxe edition of the album was released on September 25, 2020.

"Imported" is a song by Canadian singer Jessie Reyez from her second extended play Being Human in Public (2018). The original version of the song featured Jamaican singer JRM. Both artists wrote the song alongside its producer Hennedub.

Peter Huang is a music video director. He won the 2020 Prism Prize for directing the music video for Jessie Reyez's "Far Away". He had previously been shortlisted for the Prism Prize in 2018 and in 2019. He was also longlisted for the Prism Prize in 2017 and 2019. Manila Grey are a Canadian R&B duo from Vancouver, British Columbia. They are most noted for receiving a Juno Award nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2021.
