King of R&B is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Jacquees. It was released on November 8, 2019, by Cash Money Records and Republic Records.
In 2018 Jacquees started to work on the album going for a direction that detached itself from the hip hop-influenced sound of his debut album, going for a pure R&B direction for an album that was supposed to be called Round II. [2] In December 2018, Jacquees, on his Instagram profile, claimed to be the "king of R&B" for his generation, and this led to a strong controversy about it, [3] escalating to a discussion in the urban world about who was the "king of R&B", [4] with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent, Bobby Brown and others publicly speaking out on the discussion, [5] [6] [7] giving the "throne" to Chris Brown. [8] [9] American rapper Quavo, while talking to the singer, told him that the huge discussion sparked after his claim should've brought him to change the title of the album to King of R&B, and he decided to follow the rapper's advice. The singer explained to Rolling Stone the title, as well as his statement saying:
Well, I got off stage and I had just performed in Rochester, New York and it had been on my mind anyway ‘cause I was just thinking like that. People ain’t really doing what I’m doing right now. I listen to everybody’s music. I’m a fan of it all, but for real R&B, ain’t nobody doing what I’m doing. So I get offstage. I get in the car. I turn on the radio and they like "Yeah, Jacquees just got offstage. He just left Dallas. He on his way to Tampa. Jacquees real work real hard. Man, if you think about it Jacquees the king of R&B for this generation." They was like "I mean think about it. Think about the kids. Think about you 25-years-old, you 16-years-old, that’s who you listening to. He the most consistent right now and the music he’s dropping right now is R&B. Jacquees is the king of R&B." I walked in the airport. I sat down and I’m just like, "You know what man? I’m the king of R&B." That’s what’s going on. That’s how I feel. I been feeling like that before I heard it, but that’s what it is. And it fit the album's mood, the music that I made for it, it's fully straight real R&B. [11]

The album received mainly positive reviews from critics. Charles Holmes of Rolling Stone praised the album for its sound, calling it one of the best albums of 2019. [11] Exclaim!'s Mathias Pageau asserted that "Jacquees certainly has a beautiful voice", but "Listening to King of R&B, there is a sense that Jacquees tries hard to emulate his heroes, instead of letting himself be inspired by them". [12] Andy Kellman of Pitchfork wrote positively of the album, stating that on the record Jacquees "even straddling the hip-hop world, he never loses the smoothness R&B requires. At a time when so many pride themselves on being genre-benders, he remains a formalist". [1]

Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., better known by the stage names T.I. and Tip, is an American rapper. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Harris is known as one of the pioneers of the hip hop subgenre trap music, along with fellow Atlanta-based rappers Jeezy and Gucci Mane. Harris signed his first major-label record deal in 1999 with Arista Records subsidiary LaFace. In 2001, he released I'm Serious, his solo debut and only album with the label, as well as formed the southern hip hop group P$C. Upon being dropped from Arista, Harris signed to Atlantic and soon co-founded his own label imprint, Grand Hustle Records, which he launched in 2002.
Bryan Christopher Williams, better known by his stage name Birdman, is an American record executive and rapper. He is the co-founder and public face of Cash Money Records which he founded with his older brother Ronald "Slim" Williams in 1992. Birdman released his debut album in 2002, and has gone on to release four solo studio albums in total. Aside from his solo career, he is also a member of the hip-hop duo Big Tymers, along with producer Mannie Fresh.
Lloyd Polite Jr., is an American R&B singer. Born in New Orleans and raised in Decatur, he initially began his musical career as a member of the preteen-boy band N-Toon. The band disbanded in 2001 and Polite embarked on a solo career in 2003. He subsequently signed a record deal with American music executive Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. Records, under the aegis of Def Jam Recordings. In 2004, Polite released his solo debut single "Southside", the title-track from his debut album, Southside (2004). The single quickly charted on the US Billboard Hot 100, and became a top 40 hit. His second album Street Love, was released in 2007 and featured the top 20 hits "You" and "Get It Shawty".
Donell Jones is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is most notable for the hits "U Know What's Up", "Where I Wanna Be", and his cover of Stevie Wonder's "Knocks Me Off My Feet". Jones' first studio album My Heart, was released in 1996, but he is best known for his late 1990s release of his second album Where I Wanna Be.
Christopher Maurice Brown is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, and actor. One of the most successful R&B singers of all time, he has often been referred to by many contemporaries as the "King of R&B". His musical style has been defined as polyhedric, with his R&B being characterized by several influences from other genres, mainly pop music and hip hop. His lyrics develop predominantly over themes of romance, sex, fast life, desire, lovesickness, regret, emotional conflict and loneliness. Brown has had wide comparisons to Michael Jackson for his stage presence.
Before I Self Destruct is the fourth studio album by American rapper 50 Cent, released November 9, 2009, on Shady Records, Aftermath Entertainment, G-Unit Records, Interscope Records and Universal Music Group. The album is his final solo release with Shady, Aftermath and Interscope excluding his 2017 Greatest Hits album Best Of. A feature film, also titled Before I Self Destruct was also made, and is available within the album packaging.
