The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) is a private modern and contemporary art museum with locations in New Delhi and Noida. [1] [2] Established in 2010, it is India's first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art.
The museum sponsored by the Shiv Nadar Foundation started out as a gallery created in the premises of HCL Technologies in Noida [3] which opened its doors to the public in January 2010 with an exhibition titled Open Doors. The exhibition comprises extraordinary works that Kiran Nadar collected over the last two decade signifying the relevant moment in the 20th century art. [4]
After a year, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art moved into South Court Mall at Saket District Centre, [5] [6] inaugurated with the exhibition Time unfolded where the work of 50 artists were displayed. [7] In 2019, David Adjaye was selected to design a new 9,300 m2 (100,000 sq ft) building for the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art near Indira Gandhi International Airport, containing 11 galleries for temporary exhibitions and rotating displays of the collection. [8]
The core collection holds historically important works acquired from various sources include artists ranging from celebrated Indian painters like Raja Ravi Varma and M. F. Husain to contemporary blue-chip artists like Anish Kapoor, and emerging artists. [9] Other artists include A. Ramachandran, Arpita Singh, F. N. Souza, Jamini Roy, Jogen Chowdhury, Krishen Khanna, Manjit Bawa, N. S. Harsha, Ram Kumar, Rameshwar Broota, S. H. Raza, Subodh Gupta, Tyeb Mehta, and V. S. Gaitonde. [2] Two of the most significant paintings acquired by Kiran Nadar that is now a part of the museum's permanent collection is Syed Haider Raza's seminal work Saurashtra which fetched a record 16.42 crore ($3,486,965) at Christie's in London in 2010. [10] The second one was in 2015 where she bid 26.41 crore for the monumental 8 ft x 4 ft oil painting Birth (1955) by F.N Souza , a painting considered one of his best. [9]
Sayed Haider Raza was an Indian painter who lived and worked in France from 1950 until his death, while maintaining strong ties with India. He was born in Kakkaiya, Central Provinces, British India, which is now present-day Madhya Pradesh.
Francis Newton Souza was an Indian-American British Asian artist. He was a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group of Bombay. Souza's style exhibited both decadence and primitivism.
Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, also known as V. S. Gaitonde, was regarded as one of India's foremost abstract painters. He received the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1971.
Arpita Singh is an Indian artist. Known to be a figurative artist and a modernist, her canvases have both a story line and a carnival of images arranged in a curiously subversive manner. Her artistic approach can be described as an expedition without destination. Her work reflects her background. She brings her inner vision of emotions to the art inspired by her own background and what she sees around the society that mainly affects women. Her works also include traditional Indian art forms and aesthetics, like miniaturist painting and different forms of folk art, employing them in her work regularly.
Subodh Gupta is an Indian contemporary artist based in New Delhi. His work encompasses sculpture, installation, painting, photography, performance and video.
Sonia Khurana is an Indian artist. She works with lens-based media: photo, video, and the moving image, as well as performance, text, drawing, sound, music, voice, and installation.
Talwar Gallery is a contemporary Indian art gallery. Founded by Deepak Talwar, it opened in New York City in September 2001 and in New Delhi in 2007.
Ranjani Shettar was born in 1977 in Bangalore, India. She is a visual artist, who is known for her large-scale sculptural installations displayed at prestigious institutions around the world. Shettar currently lives and works in Karnataka, India. Over the last two decades her works have been featured in solo and group presentations at museums across the globe. Ranjani Shettar is exclusively represented by Talwar Gallery, that has hosted ten solo presentations of the artist till date.

She founded Critical Collective, a forum for thinking about conceptual frames within art history and practice in contemporary India.
Kiran Shiv Nadar is an Indian art collector and philanthropist. Kiran is the wife of Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies, and is a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation and the founder of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.
Krishnaji Howlaji Ara was an Indian painter and is seen as the first contemporary Indian painter to meticulously use the female nude as a subject. He was a part of the Progressive Artists' Group in Bombay and was a founder of the Artists' Centre in Mumbai. Opinions about Ara's works remain divided with his critics accusing them of lacking perfection and not referenced from life. In 2017, curator Qaroon Thapar 22 works of Ara in an exhibition in Mumbai called "Privately Ara".
Sheba Chhachhi is a photographer, women's rights activist, writer, film-maker and an installation artist. She is based in New Delhi and has exhibited her works widely in India and internationally.
Laxman Pai was an Indian artist and painter. He was a principal of the Goa College of Art, a post he held from 1977 to 1987. Pai was a recipient of several awards including India's third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan, awarded by the Government of India.
Nalini Malani is a contemporary Indian artist widely acknowledged to be among the country's first generation of video artists. She works with several mediums which include theater, videos, installations along with mixed media paintings and drawings. The subjects of her creations are deeply influenced by her experience of migration in the aftermath of the partition of India. Subsequently, pressing feminist issues have also become a part of her creative output. Malani has evolved a visual language that is iconic, moving from stop motion, erasure animations, reverse paintings and most recently to digital animations, where she draws directly with her finger onto a tablet.
Yamini Nayar is a visual artist working between New York and Delhi. Her work is part of the collection of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Saatchi Collection, Queensland Art Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the US Department of State Art in Embassies collection.
