Kirti Jain is a theatre director from Prayagraj, India. She is a former director of National School of Drama. She received many awards and honors including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2011.

Biography

Kirti Jain was born on 11 December 1949 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nema Chandra Jain, a playwright and writer, and Rekha Jain, a children's playwright. [1]

She completed her M.A. in English literature from Delhi University. [2] She then completed her Diploma in Theatre with specialization in direction from the National School of Drama (1969–1972). [2] She also studied Kathak dance under Maya Rao at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi. [1]

Career

Kirti Jain started her career as a producer at Doordarshan, Delhi in 1972. [1]

Kirti Jain is a trustee of the Natarang Pratishthan, a theatre archives and documentation centre based in Uttar Pradesh. [3] She was a member of the editorial board of Studies in Theatre and Performance, a theatre journal published by the University of Exeter, England, and has contributed essays to the Companion to the Indian Theatre and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance, published by Oxford University Press. [4]

At National School of Drama

Kirti was appointed as an associate professor of Indian Theatre History at the National School of Drama in 1977, later becoming a professor of Modern Indian drama and serving as its director from 1988 to 1995. [5] During this period, she started the National School of Drama's Theatre in Education (TIE) programme to promote children's theatre, Documentation and Publishing programmes, and also established the National School of Drama's Regional Research Centre in Bangalore. [3] She also initiated the National School of Drama's collaboration with theatre departments in foreign universities, particularly those in the UK, Poland and Germany. [1]

Works

Her feminist play Aur Kitne Tukde, based on Urvashi Butalia's The Other Side of Silence, which is set during the Partition of India, addresses gender-based violence and patriarchy. [6] Tinka Tinka, a play based on the Gujarat earthquake, was prepared by her with students from NSD, Kaun Thagwa Nagaria Lootal Ho by her is based on a Hindi story by Kashinath Singh. [7] She directed Girish Karnad's Hayavadana with students from Dartington College of Arts in England. [7] Based on the novel of the same name by Ashapurna Devi, Subarnalatha, which tells the story of a woman who struggles against patriarchy and seeks a place of her own throughout her life, was adapted for a play by Geetanjali Sri in 1999 and directed by Kirti Jain. [7] Baghdad Burning (2007), another political drama she directed is based on US invasion of Iraq. [2] The play Kaun Thagwa Nagaria Lootal Ho directed by her is based on globalization and market economy. [2] Hamara Shahar Us Baras which discuss the impact of communal politics is a stage adaptation of Geetanjali Shree's novel with same title. [8] She had also directed Mohan Rakesh's Ashadh Ka Ek Din , Lehron Ke Rajhans, and Mahesh Elkunchwar's Holi. [7]

She is the editor of the book Badal Sircar: Search for a Language of Theatre ( ISBN   978-9383098965, Niyogi Books). [6]

Awards and honors

In 2010, for her overall contributions in the field of theatre, Kirti received the B. V. Karanth Smrirti Puraskar. [2] She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2011. [7]

He elected as National President of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).

Suresh Bhardwaj is an Indian theatre, film and television director as well as a lighting and scenic designer. He has acted in many plays as lead actor as well. He is the director of (Aakar Kala Sangam) (AKS), a Delhi based theatre group. He has also served as faculty member of the National School of Drama In 2005 he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for lighting design from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama.

Pandit Durga Lal was a renowned Kathak dancer of the Jaipur Gharana. He was born in Mahendragarh, Rajasthan. He is known for playing the main role in the 1989 dance drama Ghanashyam, the music of which was composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar and was produced by Birmingham Opera Company. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984.

Usha Ganguli was an Indian theatre director-actor and activist, most known for her work in Hindi theatre in Kolkata in the 1970s and 1980s. Tapas Sen was a noted Indian stage lighting designer, who was an important figure in 20th-century Indian theatre. He started working with Bengali theatre movement in Kolkata in the late 1940s, along with noted directors, Utpal Dutt and Shambhu Mitra. Later he became a founding member of the Indian People's Theatre Association's (IPTA), Delhi chapter, and worked closely with Hindi theatre. Through his career stretching five decades he worked theatre directors, Ebrahim Alkazi, Vijay Tendulkar, and also dancers Sadhana Bose, Chandralekha, Birju Maharaj and Kelucharan Mahapatra. Dr. Deerghasi Vizai Bhaskar, born in 1958 in Ampolu village, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, hails from a poor family. Raghavan, a Sanskrit scholar and musicologist. She received several awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contribution. She held several positions including the executive board member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, member of the general council of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and the secretary of the Madras Music Academy.

Rekha Jain (1924—2010) was an Indian children's playwright, director, and folk music expert. In addition to plays for children, she has also written articles and reviews on Indian folk music and folk dance. She received awards from the Hindi Academy, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi Natya Sangham, Delhi Rotary Club, Sahityakar Samman, Delhi Hindi Academy etc. In 2006, the Sangeet Natak Akademi honoured her with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contributions.

Manjula Ramaswamy is a bharathanatyam dancer and dance teacher from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Together with her father, she started a dance academy called Sri Rama Natak Niketan in Hyderabad. She received many awards and honors including the Ugadi Puraskar from the Andhra Pradesh government and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2022.
