Kirti Jain is a theatre director from Prayagraj, India. She is a former director of National School of Drama. She received many awards and honors including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2011.
Kirti Jain was born on 11 December 1949 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nema Chandra Jain, a playwright and writer, and Rekha Jain, a children's playwright. [1]
She completed her M.A. in English literature from Delhi University. [2] She then completed her Diploma in Theatre with specialization in direction from the National School of Drama (1969–1972). [2] She also studied Kathak dance under Maya Rao at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi. [1]
Kirti Jain started her career as a producer at Doordarshan, Delhi in 1972. [1]
Kirti Jain is a trustee of the Natarang Pratishthan, a theatre archives and documentation centre based in Uttar Pradesh. [3] She was a member of the editorial board of Studies in Theatre and Performance, a theatre journal published by the University of Exeter, England, and has contributed essays to the Companion to the Indian Theatre and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance, published by Oxford University Press. Kirti was appointed as an associate professor of Indian Theatre History at the National School of Drama in 1977, later becoming a professor of Modern Indian drama and serving as its director from 1988 to 1995. [5] During this period, she started the National School of Drama's Theatre in Education (TIE) programme to promote children's theatre, Documentation and Publishing programmes, and also established the National School of Drama's Regional Research Centre in Bangalore. [3] She also initiated the National School of Drama's collaboration with theatre departments in foreign universities, particularly those in the UK, Poland and Germany. [1]
Her feminist play Aur Kitne Tukde, based on Urvashi Butalia's The Other Side of Silence, which is set during the Partition of India, addresses gender-based violence and patriarchy. [6] Tinka Tinka, a play based on the Gujarat earthquake, was prepared by her with students from NSD, Kaun Thagwa Nagaria Lootal Ho by her is based on a Hindi story by Kashinath Singh. [7] She directed Girish Karnad's Hayavadana with students from Dartington College of Arts in England. [7] Based on the novel of the same name by Ashapurna Devi, Subarnalatha, which tells the story of a woman who struggles against patriarchy and seeks a place of her own throughout her life, was adapted for a play by Geetanjali Sri in 1999 and directed by Kirti Jain. [7] Baghdad Burning (2007), another political drama she directed is based on US invasion of Iraq. [2] The play Kaun Thagwa Nagaria Lootal Ho directed by her is based on globalization and market economy. [2] Hamara Shahar Us Baras which discuss the impact of communal politics is a stage adaptation of Geetanjali Shree's novel with same title. [8] She had also directed Mohan Rakesh's Ashadh Ka Ek Din , Lehron Ke Rajhans, and Mahesh Elkunchwar's Holi. [7]
She is the editor of the book Badal Sircar: Search for a Language of Theatre ( ISBN 978-9383098965, Niyogi Books). [6]
In 2010, for her overall contributions in the field of theatre, Kirti received the B. V. Karanth Smrirti Puraskar. [2] She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 2011. [7]
Bansi Kaul was an Indian theatre director and the founder of Rang Vidushak, a theatre group in Bhopal. He was a recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2014, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995. Some of his notable plays included Aala Afsar, Kahan Kabir, and Sidhi Dar Sidhi urf Tukke pe Tukka. He was a designer and associate show director for the 2010 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony and also the art director for the 1986 and 1987 Khajuraho Festival.

He elected as National President of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA).
Suresh Bhardwaj is an Indian theatre, film and television director as well as a lighting and scenic designer. He has acted in many plays as lead actor as well. He is the director of (Aakar Kala Sangam) (AKS), a Delhi based theatre group. He has also served as faculty member of the National School of Drama In 2005 he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for lighting design from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama.
Pandit Durga Lal was a renowned Kathak dancer of the Jaipur Gharana. He was born in Mahendragarh, Rajasthan. He is known for playing the main role in the 1989 dance drama Ghanashyam, the music of which was composed by Pandit Ravi Shankar and was produced by Birmingham Opera Company. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1984.

Usha Ganguli was an Indian theatre director-actor and activist, most known for her work in Hindi theatre in Kolkata in the 1970s and 1980s. She founded Rangakarmee theatre group in 1976, known for its productions like Mahabhoj, Rudali, Court Martial, and Antaryatra. Apart from thespian Shyamanand Jalan of Padatik, she was the only other theatre director to practise Hindi theatre in Kolkata, which is largely Bengali speaking.

Her well-known plays include Kitchen Katha, The Suit, Yerma, Nagamandala, The Mad Woman of Chaillot, Little Eyolf, Bitter Fruit, Naked Voices, Stree Patra and Gumm Hai.
Sajitha Madathil is an Indian film and theatre actor. Her performance in Joy Mathew's feature film Shutter (2012) won her the Kerala State film award for second best actress. She is the head of the department of Acting at the K. R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts (KRNNIVSA), an autonomous institute established by the Government of Kerala. She had been the Deputy Secretary of the Sangeet Natak Akademi New Delhi(Academy of Music and Dance, India), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She appeared in the feature films Shutter in 2012, in Adimadhyantham in 2011, and in Shalini Usha Nair's feature film Akam in 2011.
Tapas Sen was a noted Indian stage lighting designer, who was an important figure in 20th-century Indian theatre. He started working with Bengali theatre movement in Kolkata in the late 1940s, along with noted directors, Utpal Dutt and Shambhu Mitra. Later he became a founding member of the Indian People's Theatre Association's (IPTA), Delhi chapter, and worked closely with Hindi theatre. Through his career stretching five decades he worked theatre directors, Ebrahim Alkazi, Vijay Tendulkar, and also dancers Sadhana Bose, Chandralekha, Birju Maharaj and Kelucharan Mahapatra. He was known not only for his creative stage lighting, but also had a significant impact on the work of leading theatre director of the time.
Sabitri Heisnam is an Indian stage actor and one of the notable theatre personalities in Manipuri theatre. She has also acted in the critically acclaimed short film, Scribbles on Akka (2000), directed by Madhusree Dutta, which won the IDPA Award, best script award at Shanghai International Film Festival and the National Film Award for Best Anthropological Film. She is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award of 1991. The Government of India awarded her the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for her contributions to Manipuri theatre.
Alok Chatterjee was an Indian theatre actor and director known for his theatre productions like Death of a Salesman, Nat Samrat and #Anandmath latest play 2022. He has been teaching at NSD and Pune based FTII. He also taught acting in the institute of Anupam Kher, Actor Prepress in Mumbai. At present, Chatterjee, in Madhya Pradesh Natya Vidyalaya Bhopal, is known for his vast range of acting (teaching) with deep literary understanding. He is a gold medalist from the National School of Drama, Delhi for best acting. At present Alok Chatterjee does theatre in his hometown at Bhopal. He was also awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2019 by the president of India Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Her performances cover many genres - dance theatre, comedy, multi-media, and theatre in education.She is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2010), which she returned five years later citing growth of intolerance in India.
Dr. Deerghasi Vizai Bhaskar, born in 1958 in Ampolu village, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, hails from a poor family. He began writing dramas at the age of twenty-two, with his debut play Turpu Tellanrindi, which depicted the struggles of weavers. Though he initially started his literary career writing short stories, on the advice of Kalipatnam Master, he transitioned to playwriting under the guidance of S.K. Misro, a veteran stage director. His passion for theater led him to pursue academic research in the field, culminating in a thesis on Bertolt Brecht's influence on Telugu drama.

Maddali Usha Gayatri is an Indian Kuchipudi exponent, danseuse, guru and choreographer from the state of Andhra Pradesh. One of her works, Nrityam Darsayami, included a troupe of 12 of her disciples performing for 12 hours uninterruptedly.

Raghavan, a Sanskrit scholar and musicologist. She received several awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contribution. She held several positions including the executive board member of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, member of the general council of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, and the secretary of the Madras Music Academy.
Rekha Jain (1924—2010) was an Indian children's playwright, director, and folk music expert. In addition to plays for children, she has also written articles and reviews on Indian folk music and folk dance. She received awards from the Hindi Academy, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi Natya Sangham, Delhi Rotary Club, Sahityakar Samman, Delhi Hindi Academy etc. In 2006, the Sangeet Natak Akademi honoured her with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contributions.
Manjula Ramaswamy is a bharathanatyam dancer and dance teacher from Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Together with her father, she started a dance academy called Sri Rama Natak Niketan in Hyderabad. She received many awards and honors including the Ugadi Puraskar from the Andhra Pradesh government and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2022.
