Kishore Lal (also spelled as Kishor Lal) is a former member of the parliament of India from Bharatiya Lok Dal (later known as Janata Party). He won the 1977 Indian general election from the East Delhi (Lok Sabha constituency). [1] [2] In 1977 he defeated Congress stalwart leader H. K. L. Bhagat by a margin of 133,107 votes. Kishore Lal gained 240,594 votes while Harkishan Lal Bhagat alias H.K.L. Bhagat could secure only 107,487 votes. Lal's success in 1977 was part of an infamous defeat of the Congress party in the 1977 election following The Emergency. In 1980, H.K.L Bhagat returned to his seat when he defeated Lal by a margin of 22%. Lal attempted to challenge Bhagat in 1984 and 1989, but was unsuccessful. He did not attempt to challenge the East Delhi seat in 1991. [3] [4]

Personal life

Born at Kulachi Village, Dera Ismail Khan District (now in Pakistan) on December 30, 1932. Mr. KISHORE LAL is the son of Shri Kushi ram. He availed BA degree and later he secured Diploma in Business Management from Delhi University. [1] He married Smt. Promila Kishore on January 19, 1964. [5] He has a son and two daughters. [1] [6]

Political career

Previously associated with Congress, Mr Kishore Lal served as a member of Municipal Corporation of Delhi from 1956 to 1977. He was the leader of opposition in Municipal Corporation of Delhi from 1962 to 1975. During 1969–75, he served as a member of Standing Committee, Municipal Corporation of Delhi. During 1962–75, he was a Member of Delhi Development Authority. [1] He was also associated with the some trade unions. [1] [4] Now he is retired from politics, but continued his social work. He is at present Chairman of Children's Book Trust, New Delhi founded by Cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai better known as Shankar. [7] [8]

Hari Krishan Lal Bhagat was an Indian politician of the Congress party. He served as the Deputy Mayor and Mayor of Delhi, the Chief Whip of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), and as a six-time MP and Union minister for 22 years. Hailed as the “Uncrowned King Of Delhi" and "Kingmaker", Bhagat was commonly known for being a successful loyalist to Indira Gandhi and maintained unparalleled influence in Delhi and the Congress Party throughout the 1970s and 80s. During his time as a politician, Bhagat instated massive influence in Delhi, and it's often alleged that no Delhi politician could start their careers without the approval of Bhagat, thus giving him the name "Kingmaker". Bhagat's career reached its peak in the 1984 election, in which his victory for the East Delhi seat was second largest out of all 543 victories in the entire country. Bhagat's career declined in the early 1990s after he was named in several commissions investigating the role of Congress politicians during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. His alleged role in the riots is controversial, though he was cleared by the government in two trials in the 1990s and early 2000s.

In June 1992 a by-election was held for the New Delhi seat in the Lok Sabha. The by-election was called after the resignation of the incumbent Member of Parliament L.K. Advani.

K. Venkatagiri Gowda (1923-2004) was an Indian economist and politician from Bharatiya Janata Party. He was the member of 10th Lok Sabha from Bangalore South. Gowda defeated the incumbent MP and former Chief Minister of Karnataka R. Gundu Rao and thus BJP won the elections for the 1st time in Bangalore South.
