Knežija is one of the older parts of Trešnjevka, Zagreb, Croatia. The area covered by the local city council Knežija has around 12,000 inhabitants. [1]
Recently Knežija is being renewed. A lot of new buildings have been built and the looks of the old neighbourhood have almost disappeared.
The music ensemble Trešnjevka, headquartered in Knežija, has existed for more than 30 years, promoting the Croatian national, orchestral and vocal music and instrument called tambura. [2]
Tamburica or tamboura, refers to a family of long-necked lutes popular in Southern Europe and Central Europe, especially Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and Hungary. It is also known in Burgenland. All took their name and some characteristics from the Persian tanbur but also resemble the mandolin and guitar in the sense that its strings are plucked and often paired. The frets may be moveable to allow the playing of various modes. The variety of tamburica shapes known today were developed in Serbia and Croatia by a number of indigenous contributors near the end of the 19th century.

Ženski Košarkaški Klub Trešnjevka 2009 is a Croatian women's basketball club from Zagreb currently playing in the First League of Croatia. Its major success was winning the Ronchetti Cup in 1980 beating Maritsa Plovdiv in the final; it was the only Yugoslav team that won the competition. It also reached the final in 1976 and 1981, but lost to Slavia Prague and Spartak Moscow. Following the break-up of Yugoslavia it won three national cups between 1993 and 1996 and the national championship in 1999, remaining a regular in the Ronchetti Cup's preliminary rounds through the decade.
On 25 October 1964, a devastating flood of the River Sava struck Zagreb, Socialist Republic of Croatia, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. High rainfall upriver caused rivers and streams in the Sava catchment basin to swell and spill over their banks in many places throughout Slovenia and northern Croatia. The worst of the flooding occurred in Zagreb. Sava floods were a known hazard in the city, having affected the development of the area since the Roman times, and the 1964 flood did not have the largest extent. However, it occurred following several decades of large-scale industrialisation and urban growth which had caused the city to expand into the most flood-vulnerable areas. The quality of building construction and flood defences in the floodplain was mostly low. Regulation of the Sava and its tributaries upriver from Zagreb cut off many natural detention basins, such as fields and pastures, which caused water to pile up ahead of the city. To make matters worse, the soil was already saturated from a mid-month episode of fairly high rainfall. A second episode of high rainfall, during 22–25 October upriver in Slovenia, produced a record-high water wave in the Sava. At Zagreb's Sava River gauge, the water crested at 514 cm above zero level, exceeding the previous high water mark by more than half a metre (2 ft). This proved too much for the city's embankments. Around 60 km2 (23 sq mi) of the city was flooded, including most neighbourhoods on the western side of the floodplain.
Squatting in Croatia has existed as a phenomenon since the decline of the Roman Empire. In the 1960s much private housing in major cities was illegally constructed or expanded and since the 1990s squatting is used as a tactic by feminists, punks and anarchists. Well-known self-managed social centres such as the cultural centre Karlo Rojc in Pula, Nigdjezemska in Zadar and (AKC) Medika in Zagreb.
